Hanna, Aguero commit to play at college level

MOULTRIE — Two Colquitt County High golfers who are expected to lead outstanding teams next spring have committed to playing collegiately the following season.

Marin Hanna, who has played four seasons for the Lady Packers, has committed playing her college golf at Mercer.

Bowen Aguero, expected to be one of the leaders on a potentially strong Packers team, will go to Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs.

Emmanuel has been ranked as one of the top 40 private private school in the country.

And Aguero said that 63 percent of the some 1,200 students are athletes.

And its golf program is just in its second year under head coach Howard Eaton, who will lead it from NAIA to NCAA Division II next year.

And Aguero is looking forward to be part of that transition.

“They are on the rise,” Aguero said of the Lions golf program.

Before he can take a shot at earning a place on the Emmanuel College team, Aguero has some other golf goals.

“I want to practice hard and work on my short game,” he said.

He also would like to help the Colquitt County team earn a place in the Class AAAAAA tournament, which will be played next spring at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.

“We’ve got a chance to be a great team this year,” he said.

Packers coach Donald Dale knows Aguero’s golf potential, which is witnessed by his low medalist performance in last year’s Trojan Invitational at Douglas Country Club.

But Dale also challenged Aguero, who is one of just two seniors on the team, to take on a leadership role.

“I told him older players have to set an example,” Dale said. “And he’s done that.

“He’s a great player and a great leader for us.”

Aguero missed the first couple of tournaments his freshman year, but has been a big part of the team’s lineup ever since.

Hanna also has been playing outstanding golf for the Lady Packers since she was a ninth-grader.

She has a 76 stroke average the last two years and Colquitt County girls coach Matt Key is expecting even better play his year.

“I expect a couple tournaments unde par,” Key said. “If not more.”

Hanna, who has been the Lady Packers leading player the last few seasons, also has been a regular on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour circuit, helping improve her game.

And she would like to finish her high school career on a positive note, which could culminate in the Class AAAAAA girls tournament, which will be played at Sunset Country Club.

The Lady Packers will be on of the favorites to win the region tournament under a new format that will count the top three girls scores.

Joining Hanna on what is expected to be a highly competitive girls team will be Taylor Marie Griner and Hanna Friedlander.

If they are playing well, those three will give the Lady Packers an edge at the region and state tournaments.

“I’m expecting big things out of them,” Key said.

Hanna said she is continuing to work hard “so I can be where I need to be.”

She shot a 79 in the Lady Packer Invitational and was the low medalist at the Region 1-AAAAA tournament, also at Sunset County Club, leading the Lady Packers to the championship.

She went on to shoot a 78 at the state tournament at West Lake Country Club in Augusta to help lead the Lady Packers to a fourth-place finish.

Hanna and Griner were the co-low medalists at the Georgia State Golf Association’s junior Sectional Match at the Valdosta Country Club in July, helping the Southwest team win the title.

She has be considering Mercer for a while and said she really likes the Macon school’s program and its coach Gary Guyer.

Guyer has been the Mercer women’s golf coach since 2007 and made the team a consistent challenger for the Atlantic Sun conference championship.
