MOULTRIE —
Ten days after his Colquitt County football team was defeated Grayson 35-31 in the state semifinals in Loganville, Packers coach Rush Propst is still unhappy.
Three calls by the officiating crew went against the Packers in the final six minutes as Grayson drove 87 yards to what proved to be a game winning touchdown.
An illegal receiver penalty on the Ram on a third down play with 5:55 left was marched off, but the penalty calls for a loss of down, Propst said.
But instead of Grayson facing a fourth down and likely preparing to punt the football to the Packers, the Rams were allowed to replay third down and completed a 24-yard pass for a first down that kept the drive alive.
Later in the drive, the Rams fumbled, but maintained possession although the Packers Anthony Brumbley came out with the ball, Propst said.
Then, on a fourth-and-3 at their own 26 with 1:35 remaining, the Packers were called for pass interference, giving the Rams a new set of downs.
Propst said the pass was not catchable and called the contact “incidental.”
The Packers coach also said it appeared there was pass interference on Grayson on the Packers last-second desperation pass that fell incomplete.
Grayson’s 31-28 victory sent the Rams to last Saturday’s stat championship game, where they shut out Walton 24-0 to win the school’s first football title.
“It was probably the toughest loss I’ve had as a coach,” Propst said. “And the most disappointing thing was the way it happened.
“Our kids and our coaches worked too hard. The officials need to be held accountable just like the coaches are and the players are.”
Propst said there are ways to ensure officials are held accountable.
“And it’s the Georgia High School Association’s job to figure out what that is,” Propst said. “What happened to our football team is not right.
“I’m not real happy about having to look in the eye after as hard as they worked for 19 weeks.”
Propst said the GHSA needs “to do what is necessary to make our officials better.”
“I feel like we were a play away from a state championship,” Propst said. “When we went up 31-28, I felt real good about our chances.
“I just hate it for our kids who put so much work into it.”
Propst said he knows officials will occasionally make mistakes and that acknowledges that nothing can be done to change the outcome of the game against Grayson.
“But I’ve learned you have to stand up for yourself,” he said. “We’ve have got to take the proper steps to made sure this doesn’t happen again.
“We want an answer about what is going to be done about it. We don’t want this to happen again to us or anybody else.”
Propst said that Grayson made the plays it needed to win the game.
“I congratulate Grayson on their undefeated season,” Propst said. “It was a classic between two heavyweight teams.”
The Packers will begin preparation for the 2012 season when the off-season program begins on Jan. 9.
Signing day will be Feb. 1 and Propst said as many as 10 Packers are likely to get a chance to play at the next level.
Tight end Ty Smith has already committed to the University Georgia. Four-year starting center Bryce Giddens has committed to Southern Mississippi.
Propst said Preston Mobley has been offered as a preferred walk-on at the University of Georgia and has received several other offers.
Tre Cooper, Willie Woodyard, Sharmaine Washington, Anthony Brumbley, Dondray Copeland, Stacey Blackwell and Oscar Luna also are likely to receive offers, Propst said.
