Mill Creek offense offers unique problems

MOULTRIE —  The Mill Creek offense will presents a unique problem when the Hawks visit Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday to face Colquitt County in a Class AAAAA state playoff game.

Junior quarterback John Russ, a 6-foot-1, 215-pounder, has thrown for 2,076 yards and 20 touchdowns this season and also is Mill Creek’s leading rusher with 839 yards.

The Hawks also have a speedy back in Devonte Lewis, who has rushed for 611 yards and six touchdowns.

Then there is senior Tyler Cierski, a 6-foot-1, 260-pound fullback, who has rshed for 745 yards and 11 times.

And Cierski is no plodder. He is often the pitch man when Russ runs the option.

“They are very, very balanced,” said Packers defensive ends coach Tony Kirkland, whose group will be charged with deciding if the Hawks are throwing or running and then trying to either get to the quarterback or corral one of the three fine backs.

“They are balanced run and pass and they they have three athletes back there.”

The offensive line will look in size much like the one South Panola brought to Moultrie in August, with the smallest starter going about 230 pounds.

They will try to give Lewis enough room to scat or Cierski enough room to lower his helmet and bowl over some Packer defenders.

And wide receiver Brandon Haymon is capable of creating matchup problems in the Packers secondary. He is 6-foot-3, 180 pounds and caught 55 passes last year and has 53 receptions this season.

“They remind me a lot of the Brookwood teams we faced in the late 90s,” Kirkland said. “Their mental approach is very similar to ours.

“They are extremely well-coached and I don’t think they fear us.”

The Hawks started the season 3-5, but will bring a 7-5 record and two straight playoff upsets into the game.

“Like they say, it’s not where you start, it’s where you peak,” said Kirkland, who coached the defense on the Packers outstanding teams of the 1990s.

Kirkland is obviously pleased the Packers will be at home.

“He home fans will be a plus” he said. “It may be our only advantage.”
