MOULTRIE —
THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central recovered a Colquitt County fumble in its end zone in the first overtime to claim a 35-29 victory on Friday at the Jackets Nest.
With the scored tied 29-29 at the end of regulation of the non-region game, the coaches agreed to play overtime and the Yellow Jackets scored on their first possession on a 3-yard run by James Davis.
But the Packers blocked the extra point and needed just to score a touchdown add a conversion to win their first game of the season.
But after the Packers got a first down at Thomas County Central 3, D’Amonte Ridley was hit as he appeared ready to go into the end zone and coughed the ball up.
The Yellow Jackets recovered and began the celebration.
Thomas County Central is now 2-0 on the season.
The Packers, who were 11-3 last year and were No. 5 in one state preseason poll, fall to 0-3.
The fumble was the second costly turnover by the Packers.
With 44 seconds left in regulation, Colquitt appeared driving for what could have been a winning touchdown, when Ridley and quarterback Tyler Brown collided in the backfield and the ball came loose.
The Yellow Jackets recovered and drove to the Packers 22, where freshman Gavin Wilson’s attempt at a game-winning field goal was wide left with 1.5 seconds left.
The Packers had taken a 29-22 lead on Tevin King’s third touchdown of the game with 1:31 left in the third quarter, but Davis scored on a 2-yard run and Wilson added the game-tying conversion with 1:55 left in regulation.

The big play was a swing pass from quarterback Tyler Brown to Tevin King, who weaved his way 59 yards to a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock.
Rich Tyndall’s conversion gave the Packers the eight-point lead.
Colquitt had scored on a 34-yard pass from Brown to Blake Stamps with 47 seconds left in the half and then took a 15-14 lead when King ran in the two-point conversion after a Yellow Jackets penalty as the Packers lined up to kick the extra point.
The Packers then held when the Yellow Jacket failed on a fourth-and-10 with 6.5 seconds left in the half.
Instead of taking a knee and a one-point halftime lead, the Packers elected to throw the football and it paid off in the halftime lead.
