Packers fall to Thomas County Central in OT

MOULTRIE — THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central recovered a Colquitt County fumble in its end zone in the first overtime to claim a 35-29 victory on Friday at the Jackets Nest.

With the scored tied 29-29 at the end of regulation of the non-region game, the coaches agreed to play overtime and the Yellow Jackets scored on their first possession on a 3-yard run by James Davis.

But the Packers blocked the extra point and needed just to score a touchdown add a conversion to win their first game of the season.

But after the Packers got a first down at Thomas County Central 3, D’Amonte Ridley was hit as he appeared ready to go into the end zone and coughed the ball up.

The Yellow Jackets recovered and began the celebration.

Thomas County Central is now 2-0 on the season.

The Packers, who were 11-3 last year and were No. 5 in one state preseason poll, fall to 0-3.

The fumble was the second costly turnover by the Packers.

With 44 seconds left in regulation, Colquitt appeared driving for what could have been a winning touchdown, when Ridley and quarterback Tyler Brown collided in the backfield and the ball came loose.

The Yellow Jackets recovered and drove to the Packers 22, where freshman Gavin Wilson’s attempt at a game-winning field goal was wide left with 1.5 seconds left.

The Packers had taken a 29-22 lead on Tevin King’s third touchdown of the game with 1:31 left in the third quarter, but Davis scored on a 2-yard run and Wilson added the game-tying conversion with 1:55 left in regulation.

The Packers had two more chances, but could not come up with the big play.

Thomas County Central rolled up 380 yards of offense, including 319 on the ground.

Curtis Brooks rushed for 132 yards on 19 carries and quarterback Eric Dodson added 105 more, also on 19 carries. Davis had 68 yards on 13 attempts.

Brown completed 15-of-19 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns and Ridley ran for 129 yards on 12 carries for the Packers.

Colquitt County scored on its final two possessions of the first half to lead 22-14 at the break.

The big play was a swing pass from quarterback Tyler Brown to Tevin King, who weaved his way 59 yards to a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock.

Rich Tyndall’s conversion gave the Packers the eight-point lead.

Colquitt had scored on a 34-yard pass from Brown to Blake Stamps with 47 seconds left in the half and then took a 15-14 lead when King ran in the two-point conversion after a Yellow Jackets penalty as the Packers lined up to kick the extra point.

The Packers then held when the Yellow Jacket failed on a fourth-and-10 with 6.5 seconds left in the half.

Instead of taking a knee and a one-point halftime lead, the Packers elected to throw the football and it paid off in the halftime lead.

Thomas County Central took the lead on its first possession, driving 91 yards on 16 running play to score on a 6-yard run by Curtis Brooks with 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

Wilson’s extra point put the Yellow Jackets up 7-0.

The Packers tied the game on their next possession after Tommy Hudson returned the kickoff after the Jackets touchdown 46 yards.

Colquitt needed just five plays to score on a 12-yard run by King and Tyndall’s conversion tied it.

The Yellow Jackets drove 55 yards to score on a 8-yard run by James Davis and Wilson’s conversion put Central up 14-7 with 1:32 left.

But the Packers scored twice in the final 47 seconds to head into the locker room with the lead.
