Coffee out to end eight-game losing streak

MOULTRIE — MOULTRIE — Coffee High will take an eight-game losing streak into its Friday night game against Locust Grove at Jardine Stadium, and the Wildcats may be just what the Trojans need.

In just its second year, Region 3-AAA’s Locus Grove opened against Tift County and fell 34-7. The Wildcats will take a second-straight excursion into Region 1-AAAAA on Friday and will meet a team struggling and is desperate need of a victory.

Coffee lost its last six games last year to finish 3-7 and has not played well in its first two games this season.

The Trojans lost 20-7 in a weather-shortened opener at Brunswick, then fell in Waycross to Ware County 31-14 last Friday.

Turnover and penalties have plagued the Trojans, who still must face Appling County, Fitzgerald and Wayne County before their Region 1-AAAAA schedule begins.

Also in Region 1-AAAAA on Friday, Colquitt County will go to Thomas County Central, Lowndes will be at McEachern, Tift County will play host to Shiloh and Valdosta will meet Hardaway at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Shiloh at Tift County: The Blue Devils will try to win their second straight when Shiloh comes down from Lithonia on Friday to play at Brodie Field.

Tift lost its opener 40-26 on the road at Fitzgerald, but bounced back last week behind freshman quarterback Tadrick Jackson to beat Locust Grove.

Shiloh has not had a winning record since 2003 and has gone 4-6 each of the last two seasons under Coach Keith Wilkes.

The Generals, who play in Region 8-AAAAA, dropped their opener 24-6 to Newton last Saturday.

Lowndes at McEachern: The Vikings are off to a 2-0 start after defeating South Gwinnett 34-26 and Pebblebrook 47-7 and will try to make it three in a row when they leave Lowndes County for the first time this season on Friday.

McEachern opened its season in the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic and lost to Peachtree Ridge 24-21 on Aug. 21. The Indians, who are coming off a 10-1 record in 2009, have had two weeks to get ready for the Vikings.

The two Class AAAAA teams have met twice before, both times in the regular season, with Lowndes winning 9-0 in 2000 and 22-16 in 2001.

Hardaway at Valdosta: The Golden Hawks will take a 1-0 record when they travel to Valdosta to meet the Wildcats, also 1-0.

Region 1-AAAA’s Hardaway won its opener, defeating Harris County 13-6 on the road.

But the Golden Hawks will face a talented Valdosta team on Friday.

The Wildcats pounded Brooks County in Rance Gillespie’s first game has the Valdosta head coach.

Valdosta quarterback Ryan Whilden completed 12-of-20 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns against Brooks County. Malcolm Mitchell had three catches for 105 yards and two touchdeonws and Jay Rome caught four passes for 62 yards.

The Wildcats led 22-0 at the half.

Also this weekend, Cook (1-0) will play Americus-Sumter (1-0) at home. Cook defeated Colquitt County 15-9 on Aug. 20. The Panthers opened with a 20-7 victory over Liberty County.

South Panola will make another long trip this weekend, going to Tennessee to play Memphis University School.

The Tigers are now ranked No. 1 in Rivals High 100 after their 65-35 victory over Colquitt County.

Warner Robins will try to bounce back from its 20-0 loss to Peach County when it entertains Douglas County at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.

Westlake, which lost its opener to Washington High 33-26, will play McNair at home.

And Carver High of Montgomery, Ala., which won its opener 55-34 over Opelika, will play at Jeff Davis (0-1).
