Playoff seeding still on the line

MOULTRIE —  With the final games of the regular season to be played tonight, there are still a number of playoff possibilities for both Region 1 and Region 4 in Class AAAAAA.

The qualifying teams from those two regions will square off next weekend.

In Region 1, Camden County clinched the top spot in the region with its 24-7 victory last Friday over Lowndes, which is off this week. The Vikings will be No. 2 and, like Camden County, will play host to a first-round playoff game next week.

Colquitt County will claim a playoff berth with a win over Camden County or a Valdosta win over Coffee tonight.,

If the Packers win and Valdosta wins tonight, Valdosta and Colquitt County will each finish 4-2, with the Wildcats claiming the No. 3 seed and the Packers taking No. 4 by virtue of Valdosta’s 38-36 win when the two teams met two weeks ago.

If Colquitt wins tonight and Valdosta loses, the Packers will be 4-2 in the region and claim the No. 3 seed. Coffee and Valdosta will both finish 3-3, but Coffee will go to the playoffs and Valdosta will stay home by head-to-head competition.

If the Packers lose to Camden County and Valdosta defeats Coffee, Valdosta will finish third and the Packers will be fourth. Coffee will finish 2-4 and out of the playoffs.

The most complex finish will come if Colquitt County loses to Camden County and Valdosta loses to Coffee.

Then Colquitt County, Valdosta and Coffee will each finish 3-3. The team with the fewest points allowed against other teams in playoff positions or contending for playoff positions would take the No. 3 seed. The team with the next fewest points would be fourth. The other would be eliminated.

Colquitt currently has allowed the fewest points, 64, among the three teams that could tie, but the points it allows tonight will be factored in.

Valdosta has allowed 96 to Camden County, Lowndes and Colquitt County and the number given up against Coffee tonight would be added.

Coffee has allowed 97 to Camden County, Lowndes and Colquitt County and the amount surrendered to Valdosta tonight to be added in.

Region 4 has declared its champion with McEachern claiming the title last week with a 61-21 victory over Harrison.

The Indians are 7-2 overall, 7-0 in the region and will take a seven-game winning streak into its regular-season finale against Hillgrove tonight.

But three teams — North Cobb, Hillgrove and Marietta — are currently tied for second with 5-2 region records and South Cobb, now 4-3, could get into the mix with a victory over Pebblebrook tonight.

If North Cobb beats Campbell (3-6, 1-6) and Marietta wins over Harrison (4-5, 3-4), the likely finish would be McEachern first, North Cobb second, Marietta third and Hillgrove fourth.

Hillgrove is likely to get in even if it loses to McEachern tonight

An unlikely four-way tie would be resolved on a tiebreaker based on point differential including all eight teams in the region, according to the Marietta Daily Journal.
