May playing in Elite 80 showcase

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County softball coaches Carman and John Phillips and All-Region third baseman Meagan May are in Woodstock today to take part in the Georgia Dugout Club’s Elite 80 Showcase tournament.

Carman Phillips, the Lady Packers head coach, and John Phillips, her assistant, will coach one of the six all-star teams in the tournament, which will begin at 1 p.m. today at Woodstock’s Twin Creeks Park. The tournament features 82 of the top players in the state.

Each of the six teams will play two games. Two games will be played at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Carman Phillips is starting her seventh season as the Lady Packers head coach.

Colquitt County went 16-13 last season and qualified for the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

May will on the Black team, which includes a number of South Georgia girls, including Coffee High’s Victoria Bates.

Also on the team are two players from Effingham County and one each from Loganville, Berrien, Tattnall County, Walnut Grove, Heritage, Hillgrove, Jeff Davis, Franklin County, McIntosh and Heritage high schools.

The only other Region 1-AAAAA player in the event is third baseman/catcher Randi Smith of Lowndes, who is playing for the Red team.

Worth County has two players in the Elite 80 event: shortstop Heather Ellis and catcher Haley Ellis.

May is listed as a shortstop on the Black team’s roster, although she has primarily played third base the last three seasons.

But with her athleticism, she certainly will have no trouble handling shortstop.

A three-time All-Region 1-AAAAA selection in softball, May also is All-Region in soccer and led coach Jimbo Jarvis’s Lady Packers in goals scored last spring.

May played boys baseball as recreation player and has been an impact player for the Lady Packers since earning a starting position as a freshman.

After receiving honorable mention on the All-Region team as a ninth-grader, she has been named to the first team each of the last two seasons.

After batting .354 as a junior, May increased her average to a team-leading .443 last fall.

She also led the Lady Packers in hits, with 39, in runs with 21 and in on-base percentage with a .479. She had eight doubles and a triple.
