Special Olympians 'lasso dreams'

MOULTRIE — The theme of the 2009 Special Olympics State Horse Show was “Lasso A Dream.”

And that is what the Colquitt County Special Olympics equestrian team did Nov. 13-15 in Perry.

Ten Special Olympics athletes (from R.B. Wright Elementary, Willie J. Williams Middle School, Charlie A. Gray Junior High and Colquitt County High), six coaches/horse handlers, 11 chaperones/volunteers and four horses participated in the three-day event.

And the team brought back 30 medals, including six golds.

Colquitt County also won three silver and nine bronze medals and had five fourth-place and seven fifth-place finishes.

New for the team this year was The Futures Test (an event for beginner and intermediate riders designed to introduce them to sequenced riding patterns different from the ones they already knew).

This event was held on Friday prior to the Opening Ceremonies.
