MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls basketball team overcame 31 turnovers to knock off visiting Monroe 64-53 on Saturday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 2-0 after their 61-38 season-opening victory over Worth County in Sylvester on Friday.
On Saturday, the Lady Packers committed 12 turnovers in the first quarter and trailed 7-4 heading into the second.
But with Umeika Henry leading the way, Colquitt scored 24 poitns in the second quarter and led by a dozen at the half.
Henry scored 13 points in the second quarter.
The Lady Packers extended their lead to 21 points early in the fourth quarter before the Lady Tornadoes made a run and cut their deficit to six at 57-51 with 1:38 left in the game.
But 15 seconds later, Sarah Strong grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in and was fouled, and after the three-point play, the Lady Packers lead was back up to nine.
Henry added a free throw and Brittany Taylor got a bucket in the closing seconds to put the game away.
Henry had her second-straight 22-point effort to open the season to lead the Lady Packers.
Bria Wallace added nine, Kwantesha Love had eight, Miranda Trim added seven, Strong and Persephone Taylor each had six, Brittany Taylor had four and Shay Lovett had two.
Persephone Taylor had a big game on the boards for Colquitt County, now 2-0.
Sheniqua Young and Jessica Burk each had 18 points for the Lady Tornadoes, who scored 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Persephone Taylor also had a big game in the Lady Packers opener in Sylvester on Friday, scoring 11 points to go along with Henry’s 22 points.
Also in the win over Worth County, Wallace had six, Trim and Shay Lovett each had five, Love and Brittany Taylor each had four, and Strong and Jordan Boyd each had two.
The result of Saturday’s Colquitt County-Monroe boys game was unavailable at press time.
In Friday’s season-opener, the Colquitt County boys fell to Worth County in Sylvester 67-52.
Nate Hill led the Packers with 16 points.
Cornelius James added eight and Luis Ballenilla, Lawhe Wingfield and Tra White each had seven.
Marshall Cone added four and Kyle Tolbert chipped in three.
Colquitt County will be off until next Saturday when the Lady Packers and Packer travel to Albany for a rematch with Monroe High.
