Cheer squads set for regional

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County varsity competition cheerleaders finished second on Saturday in the Last Chance Cheer Competition in Worth County, defeating two other Region 1-AAAAA squads in the process.

Houston County was first with a score of 245.

Colquitt County was second with a 220. The Lady Packers were followed by Valdosta, with a 212, and Tift County, which had a 204.

Coach Carrie Parker was pleased with how her group performed.

“Despite a 10-point dedicution for an inverted flyer — the flyer’s head dropped below her waist on her double down dismount — we had our cleanest performance of the season,” Parker said. “I believe that we have the most difficult and impressive routine in the region.”

Parker said Colquitt County’s stunt group finished first in the longest lib competition, outlasting 11 other teams.

The group includes seniors Shay Herbert and Megan Cook, junior Ivey Reeves and sophomores Lindsey Wells and Kari Saunders.

The Worth County competition did not offer a large middle school division so the Colquitt County middle school team did not compete.

Both the varsity and middle school squads will perform an exhibition at 7 p.m. Thursday during the Norman Park Elementary School Fall Festival.

It will be the final performance of the season for the middle school team, which concluded its season at the South Georgia Cheer Fest with a first place finish.

The varsity team will travel to Fitzgerald High on Saturday to participate in the region competition.

The top four teams from region will advance to the state competition, which will be held in Columbus on Nov. 13 and 14.

The Fitzgerald event will include championships for Region 1-A, Region 2-AA, Region 1-AA, Region 1-AAA and Region 1-AAAAA.

The Region 1-AAAAA competition will begin at around 12:50 p.m.

Valdosta will go on first, followed by Houston Conty, Tift County, Lowndes and Colquitt County.

The Lady Packers are schedule to perform at about 1:10 p.m.

Admission to the region competition will be $7

“We will spend most of our time this week working on our execution,” Parker said. “Our weakest area at this point is our tumbling.

“The girls are throwing their skills, but we need to work on our synchronization.”
