MOULTRIE — Colquitt County divers took the first three places in the Metro Atlanta Meet held Friday at the Westminster Schools, with all three improving the scores they posted at their previous meet.
The trio also finished 1-2-3 in the Clarke-Oconee Invitational held Jan. 16.
Kelsey Goodman was first last Friday with a 494.1. She was followed by teammate Ann Perry Blank, who had a 468.55.
Elizabeth Ann Kirkland was third with a 454.55.
The meet was the last before the Feb. 10 state meet, which will be held at Marist.
All three appear to be peaking at the right time.
Goodman, the two-time state champion, scored 20 points higher than she did in Athens. Blank’s score on Friday was nearly 21 points higher than the one she posted in Athens.
And Kirkland’s score improved more than 34 points.
Andrea Demick of Marist was fourth last Friday and is expected to be among those challenging the Colquitt County trio for the state championship.
Gaffney Taylor of St. Pius and Emily Kaplan of Pace Academy also performed well and also should be among the state contenders.
All three train with the Atlanta Diving Club.
Colquitt County’s Haley Goodman also has qualified for the state, but did not compete last Friday.
Ashley Roberson, who trains at Moss Farms but dives for Tift County High, was 13th.
Colquitt County’s Anastasia Jimenez was 14th.
Kelsey Goodman, who has signed with Florida State, won the state championship as a freshman and as a sophomore, but was unable to defend her title last year because of an illness.
Blank, who has signed with Georgia, was second in the state meet last year and finished fourth as a sophomore.

Swimmers and divers head to state
Five swimmers and three divers are in Atlanta today to compete in the Georgia High School Association’s 2012 State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Friday. The Class AAAAA diving championships will begin at 9 this morning. The Class AAAAA swimming prelims will start at 6:30 p.m. today. The finals will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. Former Colquitt County head football coach Tim Cokely is leaving Greater Atlanta Christian to take over the program at Marianna (Fla.) High.

Tennis teams to open seasons today in Tifton
The Colquitt County High tennis teams will travel to Tifton today for Chick-fil-A Tift County High School Invitational to begin a season in which both teams appear to have legitimate shots at Region 1-AAAAA championships.

Middle school soccer sweeps openers
Olivia Griffin connnected on a penalty kick in overtime to give the Colquitt County middle school girls soccer team a victory over Lee County in their season-opener in Leesburg on Thursday.

Peach signs with Thomas University
Cook High senior Kaitie Peach signs to play softball next season at Thomas University. She is the daughter of Wesley and Sheila Peach, formerly of Moultrie. She is granddaughter of Darrell and Gayle Burgess and Thomas and Helen Peach, all of Moultrie. She was a first baseman for Cook the last four seasons, was an all-star for Adel-Cook for five years and plays travel softball for CHOAS. Lady Pack clinches top seed for region tournament
Makeba Ponder’s free throw with 6 seconds remaining gave the Colquitt County girls a 55-48 victory over Lowndes on Tuesday on the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium and ensured the Lady Packers would have the top seed in next week’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament at Tift County.
