MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Travis Register prepared for Saturday’s Region 1-AAAAA wrestling tournament by winning three of his four matches at the Cairo tournament last weekend, taking third place.
The Packers took just six wrestlers to the tournament. Register had the team’s highest finish.
All three of Register’s victories came via a pin.
The freshman, who wrestles at 189, raised his record to 30-6 this season with 21 pins.
Marquavious Clark, at 145, finished fourth, going 2-1 with one pin. The pin was the 24th of the season for Clark, who will take a 37-8 record into the region meet.
Anderson Glenn, at 119, also was 2-1 at Cairo to raise his season record to 26-9. He has 14 pins.
At 112, Jose Zunun, Colquitt County’s career leader in wins and pins, went 1-1 with a pin to finish second. He is 28-12 this season.
Will Burt, who went 1-2 with a pin at 130, and John Gray, who was 0-2 at 215, also wrestled for the Packers in Cairo.
Colquitt County wrestling coach Travis Torbert said he expects to be able to fill 10 weight classes for Saturday’s region tournament, which will be held at Lowndes.
The lineup is expected to includes Zunun at 112; Glenn at 119; Richard Smith, if healthy, at 125; Burt at 130; Clark at 145; Antonio Slaughter at 160; Chris Johnson, if healthy, at 171; Register at 189; Dillon Underwood, if healthy, or Gray, at 215; and Bryce Giddens at 285.
“I am counting on this lineup,” Torbert said.
“A couple of changes may be made depending on some this this week.”
