MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County eighth-grade boys basketball successfully played deliberate basketball on offense and got a big game from D'Nas Andrews in a 33-28 victory over Coffee on Saturday at the Charlie A. Gray Junior High gymnasium.
Colquitt never trailed in the game after Tory Ponder hit a 3-pointer with 2:31 left in the first quarter to put the Packers up 6-3.
Colquitt led by eight with 1:31 left in the second quarter, but Coffee ran off the final six points of the half to cut Colquitt's lead to two at 15-13.
The game was tied at 15-15, 17-17 and 21-21 in the third quarter before Colquitt hit the first five points of the fourth quarter. Coffee was never closer than four the rest of the way.
"We needed that," said Colquitt County eighth-grade boys coach Roger Jones as his team raised its record to 5-4. "We wanted to keep it away from them and we did that. And we played good defense.
"We stuck to the game plan."
The Packers were led by Andrews who had 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
"That's what we need from him," Jones said.
Jones also praised the work of Quan Stokes, who played well inside coming off the bench.
Donkerius DeBruce had six points for the Packers; Tyrese Kings had five; Allen Key added four; Ponder had three; and Stokes had a free throw.
The Colquitt County girls fell 52-9 in the first game and drop to 2-5 on the season.
Istajhe Johnson led Colquitt County with five points; Shyanne Young had three; and Shy'Derria Seay had a free throw.
The fourth quarter was shortened to four minutes and was played under a running clock.
The eighth-grade teams will be back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Pine Grove at the Gray gymnasium.
