Colquitt basketball teams face difficult Tuesday

MOULTRIE —  The Colquitt County High basketball teams will try to rebound from a pair of Region 1-AAAAAA losses at Brunswick on Saturday when they play host to Valdosta today on the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.

And both the Lady Packers and Packers face difficult tasks. Both Valdosta teams won their region openers on Saturday, sweeping crosstown rival Lowndes.

After their 51-47 victory over the Vikettes, the Valdosta girls are now 11-1.

The Valdosta boys cruised by the Vikings, winning 85-44 to raise their overall record to 8-3.

The Valdosta girls broke out to an 11-2 lead against Lowndes on Saturday and led 31-20 at the half.

Stormm Phillips led the Lady Cats with 20 points and was honored at halftime of the game for scoring the 1,000th career point earlier this season. Destiny Covert had 10 points and Kaneshia Kimbrough added eight for the Valdosta girls.

Tashia Brown scored 25 points for Lowndes.

The Colquitt County girls saw their nine-game winning streak come to convincing end on Saturday at Brunswick.

The Lady Pirates led by as many as 22 in the first quarter and the Lady Packers were never able to catch up.

The Lady Packers needed overtime to defeat Camden County 51-47 on Friday in their Region 1-AAAAAA opener. Colquitt’s girls are now 9-2.

In the Valdosta-Lowndes boys game on Saturday, the Wildcats appeared in control until the Vikings Kenny Moore made a steal and turned it into a layup that cut the Wildcats lead to 39-30 early in the third quarter, causing Valdosta coach Antonio Haynes to call a timeout.

Whatever he said, the Wildcats took to heart.

In a span of two minutes, Valdosta scored 14 straight points and extended the nine-point lead to 23 points.

A 20-1 run gave the Wildcats a 61-33 lead.

The Valdosta boys led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 13 at the half before breaking the game open in the third.

Clarence Smith led the Wildcats with 26 points. Rashad Lewis added 23.

Colquitt County’s boys played stellar defense and got 29 points from Kamorris Woods and 25 from Xavier Terry to defeat Camden County 71-68 on Friday.

But the Packers had nothing left for a fine Brunswick team on the road on Saturday and fell 86-57. The Colquitt County boys are now 3-6.

Also tonight, Lowndes will go to Tift County and Coffee will open at Camden County.
