14 Packers to play in War of Border all-star game

MOULTRIE — Fourteen Colquitt County High senior football players will get one last chance to impress college recruiters when they participate in the Jan. 12 Florida-Georgia War of the Border All-Star game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Middle school football players who wear their all-star game jerseys will be admitted free.

The Georgia team, which has players from the southwest Georgia area, will be coached by Thomasville High’s Richie Marsh. Colquitt County assistant Jeff Hammond will be his offensive coordinator.

Mike Coe of Madison County High will be the Florida coach.

The Georgia team’s roster includes 74 players, representing Colquitt County, Lee County, Bainbridge, Thomas County Central, Miller County, Thomasville, Americus-Sumter, Early County, Cairo, Mitchell County, Pelham, Sherwood, Trinity and Starr’s Mill high schools.

Representing the Packers will be cornerback Johnny Ward, receiver Kishaun Taylor, quarterback Cole Segraves, safety Garrett Pearce, running back John Boatwright, kicker Roberto Vega, defensive end Ikeem Blakely, punter Tyler Yost, snapper Britt Jones, guard Jeffery Davis, kicker Will Bannister, tight end Nate Madison, defensive end Jeffery Lawson and defensive end Creig Harris.

The Florida roster lists 72 players who come from the Tallahassee-North Florida area, including Jefferson County, Wakulla, East Gadsden, Madison County, Godby, Chiles, Rickards, Lincoln, North Florida Christian, Vernon, Liberty County, Florida, Taylor County, FAMU, Munroe, Aucilla Christian, Maclay, Leon and John Paul II high schools.

This all-star will be the third in a row played in Moultrie and the second sponsored by Mike Gammons, who also has put on the eighth-grade championship games held the last three years.

The Florida team took advantage of six turnovers to defeat Georgia 20-16 in last year’s game.

The game’s promotional flyer states, “Whether the War of the Border All-Star Game is a stepping stone to a college scholarship or a great memory to finish a high school career, our prayer is that it will be an event to be remembered and a special way to end a senior season.”

The game is sponsored by Ameris Bank, Colony Bank, Harvey’s Supermarket, Waffle House, Game Drink, Longhorn Steakhouse, Mobley Farms, Mobley Gin, Thomasville Dental Center, Thomasville National Bank, Thomaville Tire and CNS.

The Georgia team will practice at the stadium from 4-6 p.m. on Monday.
