Packers win five of six matches in Union Grove Wolverine duals

MOULTRIE — Travis Register continued his remarkable winning streak and helped led the Colquitt County wrestling team to wins in five of its six matches in the Union Grove Holiday Duals held last weekend in McDonough.

Register, the defending state champion in Georgia’s highest classification at 220 pounds, won all six of his matches, including five by pins, as the Packers defeated Union Grove 45-33; Woodland of Stockbridge 43-31; Eagles Landing 48-30; Luella 54-21; and Wheeler 51-29 in the event held Friday and Saturday.

The Packers only loss was to Rockdale County by a 39-29 score.

Register, who again got a late start while playing for Colquitt County state semifinalist football team, is now 8-0 this season and 42-0 over the last two seasons.

His last loss was in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament on Feb. 5, 2011, when he fell to Valdosta’s Jarquez Brown 5-0 in the finals.

Register has pinned six of his eight opponents while rounding into wrestling shape this month.

At Union Grove last weekend, he pinned Collin Marks of the host team at 1:44 in his first bout while wrestling up at 285.

He returned to 220 for the rest of the weekend and pinned Rockdale County’s Francisco Robledo in the second period.

Register notched his third straight pin of the duals when he dispatched Woodland’s Cody Brown early in the second period.

He next pinned Thomas Jones of Eagles Landing at 1:14 of the first period.

After winning by default over Trever Mickles of Luella, Register finished off his tournament performance by pinning Wheeler’s Lucas Sousa in just 51 seconds.

The Packers also got strong performances from senior Anderson Glenn and sophomores Hudson and Garrett May.

Glenn, wrestling at 138, won his first five matches – including two by pin – before dropping an 8-5 decision to Wysmark Chaves in Wheeler.

Glenn is now 27-2 this season.

At 152, Hudson May went 5-1 with a pair of pins. His only loss was an 11-9 decision against Union Grove’s Kai Kizzie in his first match. He is now 13-2 this season.

Garrett May also won five of his matches, with his only loss coming in a 9-4 decision against Rockdale County’s Anthony Banks when he wrestled up at 170.

At 160, he pinned all five of his opponents to raise his season’s record to 12-2.

Also wrestling for the Packers at Union Grove were Miguel Carranza, who was 4-2 with one pin at 106; Jordan Rosales, 3-3 with one pin at 113; Quan Williams, 2-0 with one pin at 120; Enrique Aguilar, 0-2 at 120 and 2-2 with two pins at 126; Emirin Barrera, 2-2 with a pin at 126; Jorge Martinez, 2-4 at 132; Hart Sumner, 3-3 with a pin at 145; McCants Plymel, 0-1 at 160 and 4-1 with a pin at 170; Anthony Lewis, 2-4 at 182; and Javier Martinez 3-2 at 195.

The Packers, now 13-7 on the season, will return to the mats on Friday and Saturday in the Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High School.
