YMCA gymnasts excel in Dream Believers Invitational

MOULTRIE — The teams competed in the Dream Believer's Invitational meet in Tifton this past weekend.  The AAU Level 3 team won first place over Dream It with their highest score of the season so far, a 109.5.

“The team did way beyond what I expected. All eight girls performed well,” said coach Wendy Scites.

Twins Carolyn and Isabella Matthews were sick and unable to attend. Jordan Penuel competed in the senior age group placing first with her best all around this year, 36.05.

“Jordan led the team on beam with an awesome routine to score a 9.4 for first place.,” Scites said. “  She hit each skill with good form.”

Penuel scored a 9.2 on vault, second, bars, 8.75, first and floor, 8.7, second.  

Madison Cook in the same age group earned 3 personal bests on vault, 9.4 and floor, 9.05 for first place and second on bars, beam, 9.175 and all around, 35.65.

“Madison's form brings her scores higher,” said Scites.

In the child age group our MG leader was Curstin Jackson who won three first places on vault, 9.05, floor, 8.8 and AA 35.55 her best of this year.

Jackson also placed second on beam with a 9.05. Along with her was Jaiden Lane who scored her best on 4 events, vault, 9.0, bars, 9.275, floor, 8.65 plus her AA of 35.525 for second place.

“Jaiden is a really good competitor,” Scites said.

In the same division was first timer to compete, Christian Snyder earning a 35.125 AA for third place.

 Snyder earned our team's best bar score, 9.475 and counted towards team score on beam with a 9.125, both first place in her age group.

Ivey Cooper placed third on all of her events with her highest score on the vault, 8.65.

The team’s  two youngest gymnasts were Mackenzie Smith scoring her personal best on everything.

 "Mackenzie got it all together," Scites said.

 Smith placed second on vault, 8.75, third on floor, 8.6 and AA 34.725.

Ava White counted for the team score on bars, 8.85 for third and her AA was a 33.45.

The USA level 4 and 5 teams competed late on Saturday evening.

“We hit several corrections during the warm ups but struggled during the meet,” said coach Pat Murphy-Meier.

"Their focus was not in the gym on all events."

We earned 4 nines and broke 9 personal event records.

 Mackenzie Yates, the top scorer, earned a 34.175 AA in child B division.

“Mackenzie is such a hard worker at practice," said Scites.

Yates placed second on vault, 9.15 and third beam, 8.75 her best.

Sierra Wynn counted for team score on vault, 9.2, first and bars, 8.05 her personal record. Wynn's AA was a 33.6.

Hailey Fender's record was on beam, 8.65 for second place.  Fender earned a 9.0 vault and 32.475 AA.

Emily Chapura had her best vault, 9.1, in level 4.

Makenzie Smith placed first on floor, 8.8 and second on bars, 8.55 in the JR A division.

In USA level 5, gymnast Bryleigh Pakerson earned 3 of her best scores on vault, 8.5, bars, 8.6 for 6th and AA 33.175.

“Bryleigh almost connected her bar routine.  I saw lots of improvement from the past meet,”Scites said.

 Her twin sister Alexis broke 2 of her personal records on the vault, 8.375 and beam, 8.55.

Her grip slipped on bars which cost her several points on the event. Overall she scored a 31.375.

Lillian Fagan was the top scored on USA Level 6 team with a first place AA, 34.725.

“Lillian shined during meet gaining confidence as see went along,” said Murphy-Meier.

Fagan placed first on vault, 9.05, bars, 8.6 and beam 8.925 in the child age group.

McKinley Calhoun earned 2 records on the bars, 8.1 and beam, 9.025 both for second place in the junior age group.

Calhoun placed second AA with a 32.775.

Leah Grace Wiggins went into the meet with a slight headache and it progressed into a migraine.

She was unable to finish the competition. Wiggins did placed first on vault, 8.75 beam, 7.75 and floor, 8.3.

The team placed second to In Bound Gymnastics of Albany. Ra'Mya Austin performed two of her best events on the vault, 9.05 and bars, 8.65 for third place in the Xcel Gold optional level.  Austin placed 5th overall with a 34.3.
