Richt visits with Packers coach Propst

MOULTRIE — The University of Georgia has already made a scholarship offer to Colquitt County junior offensive tackle Xavier Ward and on Thursday Georgia head coach Mark Richt was at the Packers field house to talk about him with Packers coach Rush Propst.

“He cannot talk to Xavier and did not talk to Xavier,” Propst said of Richt, who made several Southwest Georgia stops on Thursday. “But we talked about him.”

Ward was a second-team All-Region tackle for the Packers, starting all 14 games at right tackle.

Propst said he thinks Ward has potential to play at Georgia.

“For a long-bodied guy, he is very good run blocker,” Propst said. “He’s probably a better run blocker than a pass blocker right now and it’s usually the opposite.”

There are apparently no other Colquitt County players on the Georgia radar screen right now, but that could change after spring practice.

Propst said he appreciated the chance to sit down and talk football for a couple of hours with the Georgia head coach.

“Any time the head coach at Georgia comes by, it’s big news,” Propst said. “I was very pleased Mark came by.”

Former Thomasville High and Georgia quarterback Mike Bobo is the primary Bulldogs recruiter in South Georgia and has impressed Propst.

“He is one of the best recruiters who has ever walked in my door,” Propst said. “He is outstanding. I told Mike that and I told Mark that. He doesn’t come in and give you a bunch of bull.

“I have a lot of repsect for Mike Bobo and I like him a lot. He’s a South Georgia guy and he’s one of us.”

Propst said at least eight and perhaps as many 10 Colquitt County High football seniors will be signing their names to letters of intent on Feb. 3, the national signing day.

“We are working hard to make sure these kids have an opportunity to play at the next level,” said Propst, who added that he didn’t get home until after 11 o’clock on Wednesday and Thursday nights after talking with recruiters about Colquitt County players.

“There is a process you have to go through to help these kids,” Propst said. “This is extremely important.

“I want Feb. 3 to be the biggest and most important day of the year.”
