Middle school softball team splits opening doubleheader

MOULTRIE — MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school softball team opened its season with a split of a doubleheader at Tift County on Wednesday and will make its home debut at 4 p.m. today in a twin bill against Pine Grove.

The youngest Lady Packers got five hits in their season-opener, but fell to the Lady Devis 11-4.

Christin Hunnicutt, Reagan Goforth, Niki Johnson, Ashley Spradley and Christy Crosby had the Colquitt County hits.

The Lady Packers also drew five walks.

Johnson was the starting pitcher and struck out four in 3.1 innings of work.

Dakota Baker finished out the fourth inning. Amber Kling faced four batters, striking out one.

Johnson went the distance in the second game, striking out three in the four-inning, 4-3 victory that earned Colquitt County a split.

The Lady Packers won despite not having a hit in the game.

Following today’s doubleheader, the middle school girls will return to Packer Park on next Tuesday to Lowndes in another 4 p.m doubleheader.
