MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County boys basketball team will open the Region 1-AAAAA portion of its schedule tonight against 11-3 Valdosta, ranked No. 10 in Class AAAAA.
The Packers, who lost their first eight games of the season, at least will have a little momentum when the meet Wildcats at 7:30 tonight.
The Colquitt County boys will go into the game coming off their first victory of the season, a 58-53 decision over Crisp County in Cordele on Saturday night.
The victory avenged a 58-44 loss to the Cougars on Dec. 10 and helped the team shake off a disappointing six-point loss at Bainbridge the night before in a game the Packers led by one late in the fourth quarter.
“We’re starting to come together now,” said Packers first-year head coach Levon Grant. “We were close on Friday night (against Bainbridge, which had defeated the Packers 82-45 early last month) and we were able to carry a little confidence into the game (against Crisp County). Everybody kept their head in the game.”
Sharmaine Washington led the Packers with 18 points and guard Stacey Blackwell added 10.
Jay Tolbert came off the bench to contribute nine points. Jamiyus Pittman had six, Devontay Ward and Bo Grady Spence each had five and Cole Segraves added three.
They will need to play well again against the Wildcats, who already have one region game under their belts, a 55-54 victory over Coffee on Friday.
The Valdosta boys have won four of their last five and are averaging 65 points a game.
The Colquitt County girls are 7-6 as they prepare to host the Lady Cats, but they are coming off a 53-49 overtime loss to Crisp County on Saturday.
The Valdosta girls have played well this season, opening with a six-game winning streak before falling 44-37 to Statesboro.
Since the loss to the Lady Blue Devils, the Lady Cats have won four in a row, including a lopsided 61-22 win over Coffee on Friday.
Colquitt County features one of the top players in Region 1-AAAAA in sophomore Makeba Ponder, who scored 31 at Bainbridge on Friday and is averaging 18.3 points a game this season.
Also tonight, Lowndes will travel to Tift County in the Region 1-AAAAA openers for both teams.
