Segraves, defense key big upset of Camden County

MOULTRIE —  Put Cole Segraves’ surprising 70-yard touchdown run and the Packers 80-yard game-winning drive in the final five minutes aside.

The most remarkable statistic from Colquitt County’s 13-12 victory over Camden County on Friday was the Wildcats’ third-down conversion rate.

Camden County, ranked in the top five in four national polls and No. 2 in the CNN/SI rankings, converted just 1-of-10 third down opportunities.

And Camden’s Brice Ramsey had punted just 15 times in Camden’s first nine games this season. He was forced to punt six times on Friday, much to the delight of the crowd at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The Wildcats were averaging 43.7 points heading into the game, but never found much traction against a Packers defense led by senior middle linebacker John Gray and junior defensive tackle Jamiyus Pittman.

Camden had 306 yards of offense, including 68 on a touchdown run by Chris Williams that gave the Wildcats a temporary 12-7 lead with 5:32 left in the game. J.J. Green had a 40-yard run in the third quarter in a drive that ended with Ramsey fumble.

Losing three fumbles didn’t help and Colquitt was grateful to accept the turnovers, which added to the three-and-outs, led to a frustrating night for the Wildcats, who now have had two straight perfect records erased by the Packers.

Last year, Segraves threw a touchdown pass to Bobby Hill on a fourth-and-goal from the Camden 23, then hit Ty Smith for the 2-point conversion to take a 32-31 victory and end the Wildcats 12-1 season in the quarterfinals.

“We’ve had just two unbelievable comebacks against them,” Packers coach Rush Prospt said.

Camden County will still go the postseason as the No. 1 team from Region 1-AAAAAA after claiming the league championship in its first season after moving over from Region 3-AAAAAA.

The Wildcats, 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the region, will play host to Hillgrove, the No. 4 team from Region 4, on Friday at Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland.

The Packers, now 7-3 and 4-2, will travel to Walter Cantrell Stadium in Powder Springs to meet No. 9 McEachern, which closed out its regular season with a 33-30 victory over Hillgrove on Friday.

The Indians are 8-2 and will take an eight-game winning streak into their meeting with the Packers.

McEachern will have to try to solve a Colquitt County defense that has allowed just three touchdowns and a field goal in its last two games, a 27-9 win over Coffee and the stunner over Camden County.

The Indians also will have to deal with a resurgent Segraves, who lost his starting position after the Packers lost 17-14 to Lowndes.

Daniel Mobley started the next three games, but a sore shoulder has relegated him to the bench the last two games and Segraves has looked like the Segraves of last season, when he led the Packers to the state semifinals.

In the last two games, Segraves has completed 34-of-51 passes for 380 yards and two touchdowns. He also has run for 187 yards on 22 carries.

Against Camden County on Friday, he ran the ball 18 times for 170 yards, frustrating the Wildcats defense.

The big one, of course, came with the Packers trailing 6-0 and facing a third-and-2 at their own 30 with just under six minutes left in the game.

As he had done 13 times previously in the game, he took a snap out of the shotgun and headed into the gut of the Camden defensive front.

He appeared to have got the first down, when he broke loose from a tackle and headed up field for the Camden County goal line.

White-shirted Wildcats appeared to have had an angle and a shot the Packers quarterback, whose speed is not to be confused with J.J. Green’s.

But looking over his shoulder and changing his course, the Packers quarterback tied the game. Will Bannister’s extra point put Colquitt up 7-6 with 5:48 left in the game.

“That was just unbelievable,” Propst said. “He runs a 4.9, but he was probably going at about 4.5 out there.”

But Segraves wasn’t finished.

When Williams bolted 68 yards for a touchdown on the first play after the kickoff, Camden had regained the lead at 12-7.

But a missed extra point kick after a second-quarter touchdown and a failed 2-point conversion pass after Williams’ score would haunt the Wildcats.

Ramsey’s kickoff went into the end zone and the Packers started at the 20 and Segraves patiently guided the Packers down the field.

A 15-yard completion to Bobby Hill on a third-and-8 at the Colquitt 33 kept the drive going, as did an 11-yard completion to Sihiem King two plays later.

A pass interference call gave the Packers a first down at the Camden 22 and on second down Segraves and Hill connected on a 7-yard gain to the Wildcats 15.

The Packers staff called its quarterback’s number again and Segraves barreled up the middle for 11 yards for the Packers final first down at the 4. John Boatwright scored from the 3 two plays later and Colquitt led 13-12 with 54 seconds left.

As they did in the loss to the Packers last year, Camden attempted a closing-seconds field goal, but a 55-yarder was awry and the Packers had won.

“Cole just found a way,” Propst said. “He’s been through some adversity. But he’s a winner.”

The Packers — make that Segraves’ —ability to run the football was crucial, Propst said.

“I never thought we’d be able to run the football on them,” Prospt said.

The 170 yards gained on the ground by Segraves was the most for a Packer since Willie Woodyard ran for 186 yards on 18 carries in a 21-10 victory over Westlake on September 9, 2011.

The Packers got to enjoy the victory on Saturday, then were to get deep into the planning for McEachern today.

“It’s going to be a test of wills,” Propst said of the meeting with the No. 9-ranked Indians. “But (the win over Camden) is the dress rehearsal for the rest of our games.

“Every game is a state championship game for us now. But the sky’s the limit.”

Also in Colquitt County’s quadrant of the bracket are No. 8 West Forsyth and No. 10 Walton.

If the Packers can get by McEachern, they will face the Newnan-Alcovy winner in the second round.

Colquitt County is 10-3 in the postseason over the last three seasons.

PACKERS NOTES: Segraves now has completed 108-of-191 passes for 1,362 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

For his career, he has 3,477 yards to rank No. 4 behind Tyler Brown (6,197), Reggie Stancil (4,376) and Clif Henry (3,596).

With his eight catches for 52 yards, Bobby Hill now has 60 receptions for 856 yards this season and 97 for 1,447 in his career.

The 60 catches are third-most in Packers history behind 102 caught by Tommy Hudson in 2010 and the 62 grabbed by Ronald Bonner in 1994 and Christopher McCranie in 1991. Hill also is closing in on the career pass receiving yardage record of 1,572 yards held by Carlos Johnson, set 1994-1996. His 97 receptions tie him with Ty Smith for No. 5 on the career list.

Punter Tyler Yost is chasing the Colquitt County punting record of 39 yards per kick held by Sam Funderburk. Dennard Robison holds the Packers record of 44.4 yards a punt set in 1964. Yost is averaging 38.4 yards this season.
