MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County finished third in the recent Region 1-AAAAAA cross country meet and will travel to Carrollton on Saturday to compete in the state meet.
The Lady Packers finished fifth and did not qualify for the state meet.
Lowndes won the boys meet with 36 points and was followed by Valdosta, which had 74 points. Colquitt was third with 81 points and Camden County was fourth with 84 points.
Jonathan Florencio led the Packer with a time of 17:55, good for eighth place.
Also counting for the Packers were Steven Johnson, who was 15th with an 18:22; Alberto Duque, 16th, 18:24; Alex Gomez, 19th, 18:39; and Palle Gutierrez, 23rd, 18:51.
Also running for the Packers were Noah Harrison, who was 35th with a 19:27, and Fernando Miranda, who was 37th with a 19:29.
Coach Stephanie Cody said that although Johnson and Gomez turned in improved times, she was disappointed in the overall performance of the team on the Abraham Baldwin College course, which it had run before.
Lowndes also won the girls region championships with 20 points. Camden County was second with 63 and was followed by Tift County with 68, Valdosta with 101 and Colquitt County with 138.
The girls race included 42 runners.
Katie Russell was the Lady Packers first finisher, coming in fifth with a time of 22:31.
Searra Johnson was 25th with a 23:35; Aislin Sheffield was 31st with a 24:24; Kristina Scott was 32nd with a 24:41; and Tiffany Smith was 33rd with 24:52.
Also running for the Lady Packers were Kariann Lamon, who was 39th with a 25:55, and Lea Martinez, who was 41st with a 27:43.
“We didn’t run as well as we had done all year,” Cody said.

Two girls tournaments set for Saturday at the Magnolia Complex
The Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department will hold a pair of girls softball tournaments on Saturday at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Summer baseball is about assessment
The scoreboard often is not in operation during a Colquitt County baseball team’s summer game, but that is fine with Packers coach Tony Kirkland.

McAlpin honored
Colquitt County’s Dustin McAlpin, who plays baseball at Tiftarea Academy, was named to the GISA All-State team and to the All-Region 3-AAA first team. He also received Tiftarea Academy’s Christian Character Award, which was voted on by the players. He has signed to play his college baseball at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla. He is the son of Dwayne and Leanne McAlpin. Tiftarea went 28-5 in 2013, setting a school record for victories. Also honored at the team’s baseball banquet were Coach Brad Porter, named the Region 3-AAA Coach of the Year, and Eric Lee, the Region 3-AAA Player of the Year. Also earning All-Region honors were Mason Bryant, Rob Flick, Greer Howard, Eric Lee, Cade Marlowe and Thomas Spurlin. All-Region honorable mention included Jake Ball, Taylor Boothe and Bo Vickers. Lee also made the All-State team with Howard receiving honorable mention. Tiftarea Academy presented Marlowe with the Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes the player with the highest GPA. Porter also presented three other awards voted on by the players: Christian Kozma received the Teammate Award; Marlowe received the Ironman Award; and Lee received the Leadership Award.

The Colquitt County All-Stars won the warm-up tournament held Saturday at the Magnolia Sports Complex. The Lady Packer all-star team played in a warm-up tournament in Nashville on Saturday and were undefeated until the championship game, which they lost 13-12. The Lady Packers only allowed 19 runs all day while scoring 52.
