MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County seventh-grade basketball teams concluded their regular seasons with a pair of decisive wins over Newbern Middle School on Thursday at the Willie J. Williams gym.
The girls won 38-12, and the boys completed the sweep with a 56-33 victory.
The Lady Packers led only 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, but picked up the pace in the second.
Five different players scored in the period for Colquitt County, including four post players.
Za’Nautica Downs and Akia Sutton repeatedly penetrated, attracted defenders, and found open teammates.
Forwards Angel Kinchen, Ty’Brea Lamar, Kiarra Lovett and Michaela Bennefield all earned points in the paint, and Abiyah Spencer hit a jump shot to stretch the lead to 14-6 at halftime.
“I liked the fact that we showed we can play multiple styles of basketball,” coach Jon Scroggins said. “We slowed it down and worked inside; we attacked the passing lanes, got out in transition and scored that way. It was good to see we’re flexible.”
The young Lady Packers got contributions from several players off the bench in the second half, as they added another 24 points to their side of the scoreboard, while surrendering only six.
“This was a great team effort,” Scroggins added. “Akia Sutton played the best game I’ve seen in two years coaching her. She was everywhere defensively and made good decisions with the ball on the other end. Ty’Qwasia (Peterson) and Eriyona (Stokes) played very confidently. Our post players worked hard. I could go on and on — it was a lot of fun.”
Downs and Spencer tied for the team lead in scoring with eight points each. Bennefield added seven, and Kinchen finished with six. Lovett scored four, Peterson and Stokes scored two each, and Lamar made a free throw.
In the second game, the Colquitt County boys seized control early, extending their defense full-court and repeatedly forcing Newbern into committing turnovers.
The Wildcats had no answer for J.J. Peterson inside, and could not keep up with the hot outside shooting of Cameron Singletary and Jarvis Christopher.
“Our starters set the pace,” coach Josh Purvis said. “But my favorite thing about the game was that all my guys stepped in and kept it going. (Tyran) Shealy controlled the game when he was at point. Jake (Merritt) came in and handled the ball well. Leamon (Madison), TyVon (Dowdell) — we had a lot of guys step in and play well.”
Singletary and Peterson scored 15 points each, and Christopher added 14. Leamon Madison and TyVon Dowdell scored three points each, and JaQuan Willis, Shealy, and Conner Patterson scored two each.
“This was a great tune-up for our tournament next week,” Purvis added.
Both seventh-grade teams will host first-round games in next week’s conference tournament. Dates, times, and opponents have yet to be determined.
