MOULTRIE —
The Moultrie YMCA will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the gymnastics facility named in honor of the late Donald A. Blevins on Friday.
Don Blevins, or “Mr. B” to many of his gymnasts, started the Moultrie YMCA gymnastics program in 1965.
The current gymnastics center, an air-conditioned, 12,000-square-foot facility complete with an in-ground tumbling trampoline, an in-ground loose foam pit with a trampoline bed, a preschool area, and all women’s competitive apparatus, was open for classes in February of 2003.
The celebration of the facility will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. All past and present gymnasts are invited to attend an exhibition show, which will include gymnasts of all ages and skill level.
Each year, Moultrie YMCA gymnasts raise money for their gym by holding a Flip-A-Thon.For each dollar raised, a child will do a flip, jump, turn or routine.
Dollars raised help keep the gymnastics center in top shape and allow gymnastics director Pat Murphy, to ensure the best skills and coordination training equipment is on hand for the gymnasts.
The Moultrie YMCA’s gymnastics program offers classes for children ages 1 and older.
Progression through the program is based on an evaluation of skills performed by the highly certified YMCA gymnastics staff.
The Moultrie YMCA’s gymnastics program has produced State, Regional, Eastern National, Junior Olympic and YMCA National Championship qualifiers and champions at the competitive level.
Since its inception in 1916, the Moultrie YMCA has served thousands of people in the Colquitt County community.
Today, more than 8,000 citizens of Moultrie and Colquitt County participate in the many programs the Moultrie YMCA has to offer, including childcare, mentoring, aquatics, gymnastics, youth and adult sports, group exercise, wellness and more.
