MOULTRIE —
Kiarron Hendry shot a match-high 286 to help lead the Colquitt County rifle team to 1,120-1,110 victory over Worth County on Thursday at the high school.
“That’s a pretty good score right out of the box,” said Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, the Colquitt County coach. “I’m real impressed. That’s real good start.”
Hendry shot a 96 in the prone position, a match-high 94 in the standing position and had a 96 in the kneeling position.
Eugene Anderson III, another veteran, had a 282 that included a 97 in the prone, 89 in the standing and 96 in the kneeling.
Cameron Johnson shot 90 or above in all three positions and scored a 279. Katelyn Wilcott, in her first match, had a 95 in the prone, an 83 in the standing and a 95 in the kneeling for a 273.
Also shooting for the Packers on Thursday were Kellen Kern, who had a 271, and Elyssa Hullett, who had a 254.
Bryant was especially pleased with the performance of Kern, who managed a 271 despite having one shot that missed the target.
“If he hadn’t thrown that shot off, he’s looking a 280,” Bryant said.
Bryant was pleased that his team could shoot a 1,120 in its first competition of the season.
The 2012 team’s top score was a 1,111.
Hendry and Anderson were regulars in the Packers lineup last year.
Kern and Johnson have some experience. Wilcott and Hullett are first-year shooters.
“They have never shot before,” Bryant said. “So I think we should be all right in our region this year. I’m looking for good things from our rookies.”
Colquitt and Worth County shot in the JROTC building on Thursday, but Bryant said he hoped to be able to hold next Thursday’s home match against Fitzgerald in the high school cafeteria.
“We’ll be able to get more of the kids a chance to shoot,” Bryant said.
