Middle school wrestlers win opener

MOULTRIE —  The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team opened the season in impressive fashion on Wednesday, defeating Lowndes at the Pineland gymnasium.

The Packers won 13 of the 19 matches and coach Greg Yarbrough said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We have lot of kids coming back from last year’s team that have really done well,” Yarbrough said.

After John Cone dropped the first match of the evening, the middle school Packers won the next five, with Blake Tillery pinning Colby Strawder to get the streak started.

Hayes Sumner followed with a decision over Clayton Hughes and Savonte Wilson won by decision over Wyatt Fender.

John Lewis then got a pin over Christian Nix and Hayden Suggs won by decision over Austin Hughes.

After the Packers Cameron Vereen was pinned by Danny Welch, the Packers got pins from Amari Lewis over Kevin Klavon and from Jaden Merritt over Jose Gallegos.

Tucker Buckner was pinned, but the Packers followed with a pin of their own by Alejandro Sanchez of John Prairie and another by Joshua Young of the Vikings Briar White. After Trent Roberts lost by a pin, Colquitt won three straight, starting with a Gage Kent pin of Dalton Hall.

Coy Kirkland followed with a decision over Antonio Camargo and Alex Everett pinned Steve Arzola of Lowndes.

Colquitt’s Tyler Robinson lost a decision to Hunter O’Neal before Ian Brinson pinned Jacquaven Robinson.

The Vikings Tristan Sanders pinned Jamie Morgan in the final match.

The middle school Packers will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 29, when they travel to Bainbridge to meet Americus-Sumter County and Bainbridge.

Colquitt will return to the Pineland gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 30, to meet Turner County at 4:30 p.m.

The regular season will conclude with a match against Cairo and Fitzgerald on Jan. 15, at the Pineland gym.

The South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Cook.
