MOULTRIE —
Colquitt County coach Rush Propst does not get much sleep in the days leading up Friday night football games in any case, but this week might have been worse.
He’s been having trouble getting a good night’s sleep while dreaming about a back in a silver helmet with a blue No. 6 on his jersey running through his Packers.
Those dreams are of Norcross High’s Alvin Kamara, one of the state’s most coveted running backs and one who is said to be deciding between offers from Georgia and Alabama to pay for his college education.
Kamara will lead Norcross into Friday’s state semifinal game against Colquitt County at Blue Devil Stadium.
Norcross is the last unbeaten team in Class AAAAAA and Kamara is prime performer in an offense that has plenty of ammo.
The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder has carried 244 tiems for 1,959 yards and 24 touchdowns in the regular season.
In the Blue Devils quarterfinal victory over Camden County, Kamara gashed the Wildcats for 158 yards on 27 carries and also threw a touchdown pass.
In the Blue Devils scrimmage against the Packers in August in Moultrie, he ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns in less than three quarters of work.
“He’s the best we’ve seen,” Propst said. “He’s given me nightmares.
“We have got to tackle. We’ve got to take great angles and wrap up. We will just have to play great defense.”
And if Kamara was all the Packers had to worry about, the task might seem more manageable. But senior quarterback Joseph Wilber has 2,131 yards and 25 touchdowns while being intercepted just five times.
“He does a great job,” Propst said, remembering that Wilber completed 13-of-22 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown in the scrimmage.
Myles Autry, who scored the winning touchdown against the Packers in August’s scrimmage, has rushed for 549 yards and six touchdowns and leads the Devils with 43 receptions for 611 yards and nine touchdowns.
Receivers Clinton Lynch and Trey Smth has 33 and 25 receptions respectively. Smith had nine touchdown catches; Lynch has five.
“This is probably the most difficult challenge we’ve faced since we’ve been here,” Propst said.
