MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County seventh-grade girls basketball team continues to roll merrily along, winning at Newbern 32-12 on Thursday to raise its record to 6-0.
The seventh-grade boys got 32 points from J.J. Peterson and rebounded from their first loss of the season to defeat Newbern 54-33.
The eight-grade teams swept Hahira at the Charlie A. Gray Junior High gymnasium.
The seventh-grade Lady Packers were led by Michaela Bennefield, who had 12 points.
Kiarra Lovett had eight, Za’Nautica Downs had seven, Abiyah Spencer and Chyna Calhoun each had two and Ty’Brea Lamar had a free throw.
As has been their history so far this season, the seventh-grade boys started slowly, leading by just seven at 25-18 at the half.
But they outscored Hahira 29-15 in the second half to put the game away.
“We continue to play better in the second half,” said coach Josh Purvis. “We’ll start slow and then kill it in the second half.”
Peterson had his most productive night of the season with 32 points and got plenty of help from guard Cameron Singletary, who got him ball.
“Cameron is the reason J.J. plays well,” Purvis said. “He is by far the best point guard in the conference.
“And he probably was last year too when he was a sixth-grader.”
Singletary and Jarvis Christopher each had six points; Billy Rushing had four; and JaQuan Willis, Albert Stringer and Kaleb Dawson each had two.
The seventh-grade boys were rebounding after their first loss of the season, a 45-31 defeat at the hands of Tift County on Tuesday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium.
The seventh-grade teams will travel to Douglas on Saturday for a pair of games beginning a 11 a.m.
The eighth-grade girls evened their season’s record at 2-2 with a 26-15 victory over Hahira.
Trailing 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Packers outscored Hahira 14-6 in the next six minutes.
“That was the turnaround quarter for us,” coach Tiffanie Young said.
Staa Johnson led the Lady Packers with 10 points. Ty’Asia McNeal had six, Shy Seay had five, Shyanne Young had four and Ashuntee Stewart had one.
The Colquitt County eighth-grade boys were down 25-20 with 4:10 remaining, but outscored Hahira 19-5 the rest of the way to take a 39-30 victory.
The Packers did much of the damage at the free throw line, where they were 13-for-18 in the fourth quarter.
After losing their first three games, the eighth-grade Packers have now won three in a row to even their record.
Allen Key led the Packers with 10 points. Tyrese King, Dankerious DeBruce and D’nas Andrews each had eight, Tory Ponder had four and Quan Stokes had a free throw.
The eighth-graders will play host to Tift County on Monday.
