MOULTRIE —
It is still uncertain whether Newnan starting quarterback Bailey Bryant will be able to play against Colquitt County in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. second-round playoff game at Drake Stadium.
So Colquitt County coach Rush Propst said his team is preparing for both Bryant, who is more proficient throwing the football, and backup Diamond Jones, the better runner.
“We don’t know (who will play), so we’ll work on two plans,” Propst said.
Bryant, a left-handed throwing sophomore, had led the Cougars to a 9-2 record before injuring his throwing shoulder in last Friday’s 38-0 victory over Alcovy.
He did not return to the game and Jones led a pair of scoring drives in his absence.
Newnan head coach Mike McDonald, who has led the Cougars to their sixth straight trip to the second round of the playoffs, told The Newnan Times-Herald, “We are going into it to do what we have to do to win the football game.
“We are going to have to have some other guys step up and make some plays,” he said.“We are going to try and keep things as normal as possible on Friday.”
The Packers gave up 438 yards in last Friday’s 30-28 first-round victory at McEachern, but held the Region 4 champions to just three touchdowns.
The Indians had to settle for two field goals.
Still, Packers head coach Rush Propst said, “We are going to have to play better defensively.”
The Packers are expected to be without starting safety Garrett Pearce, who suffered a knee injury against McEachern.
He place will be filled by either Jamal Phillips or starting cornerback Tim Sanders.
If Sanders moves to safety, Michael Sutton will get the start at corner.
O’Shay Williams will play the other safety and Johnny Ward will be at the other corner.
John Gray, Bull Barge, Brandon Key and Quintin Hampton will get most of the snaps at linebacker.
Barge got his first interception of the season on the final play to seal the victory over McEachern.
Jamiyus Pittman, Michael Parrish, Ikeem Blakely, Creig Harris, Jeffrey Lawson and Travis Register will work in the trenches.
“Defensively, they (Colquitt) are very big,” McDonald said. “They fly around pretty good. So we are going to have our hands full.”
The Packers had a team Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday in the high school cafeteria.
“That’s a great team tradition,” Propst said.
The Packers will leave at 2 p.m. today and practice at Northgate High before spending the night in Peachtree City.
Tickets to the game will be available only at the gate and will be $12.
The game will not be televised, but will be broadcast on radio station WMTM-FM and will be online live at www.ghsa.tv.
