MOULTRIE —
Colquitt County’s Travis Register continued his smooth transition from football to wrestling, winning all three of his matches and taking the 220-pound championship in last weekend’s Wildcat Invitational at Valdosta High School.
Register has won all six of his matches since joining the wrestling team after helping the Packers football team reach the state semifinals.
The short-handed Packers finished 14th in the 15-team tournament, which was won by Ware County with 204.5 points.
The Gators had two individual champions and had 11 wrestlers in the top six of their weight classes.
Lowndes was second with 173 points, two individual champions and eight wrestlers in the top three.
Tift County was fourth, Coffee was sixth and Valdosta was eighth.
Register opened the tournament with a pin of Valdosta’s Willie McClain. In his second bout, he edged Wakulla High’s Cole Woofter 6-5. The Packers junior won the 220-pound championship with a 18-10 major decision over Coffee’s Jaquan Eady.
“Travis wrestled a great tournament,” coach Travis Torbert said. “He fought hard those last two matches.”
Colquitt County’s Anderson Glenn split his four matches in the tournament, raising his record to 16-3.
Wrestling at 138, Glenn opened with a pin of Valdosta’s Brandon Weatherspoon, then lost a 3-1 decision to Jay Durden of Lowndes.
Glenn then won an 8-5 decision over Coffee’s Ricky Arambulo and lost his final match 4-2 to Irwin County’s Evan Paulk.
Richard Smith won one of his three matches at 132, defeating Valdosta’s Eric Brown 3-0.
Javier Martinez, wrestling at 170, also won one of three, getting a 13-8 decision over Coffee’s Devante Jernigan.
The Packers were without Garrett and Hudson May, who were out of town.
“We really missed them,” Torbert said. “They’ve been our heart and soul.”
Garrett May has a 19-3 record with 14 pins. Hudson is 19-2 with 12 pins.
Colquitt will play host to Thomas County Central beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium. Varsity, junior varsity and middle school wrestlers will compete.
The Packers will leave the mats in place as they will play host to the Region 1-AAAAA duals championship on Saturday, with competition beginning at 9:30 a.m.
