MOULTRIE —
Dr. Kevin Collins, a general orthopaedic doctor who serves as a team physician for Valdosta State athletics and is the Colquitt County High team physician, has been named the 2012 Dr. Jack C. Hughston Physician of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Trainers' Association.
Collins was nominated for the honor by the VSU athletic training staff and received his honor during the GATA’s annual meeting on January 13.
“Valdosta State Athletics is very blessed to have access to and a great relationship with a physician with exceptional orthopedic skills, who is willing to take the time to explain procedures to our student-athletes and their parents, and answer questions with empathy,” said VSU assistant athletic trainer Caren Walls in making the nomination.
“Dr. Collins make the well-being and success of his patients a priority and not a business. He works with Athletic Trainers in such a professional manner and respects the work we do. He is knowledgeable and an excellent orthopedic surgeon, but it is his dedication to our student-athletes, ability to educate those around him and understanding of the athletic demands and athletic training roles that makes him an optimal team physician.”
Collins practices general orthopaedics with an interest in sports medicine and is the physician-in-charge at the Hughston Valdosta Clinic. Collins is in his sixth year with Valdosta State.
“Dr. Collins is an integral component for Athletic Health Care at Valdosta State University,” said VSU Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine Russ Hoff.
