Register, Giddens win weight classes in Cairo

MOULTRIE — Bryce Giddens and Travis Register won their weight classes in the Syrupmaker Invitational at Cairo High School on Saturday in their final competition before this weekend’s Region 1-AAAAA tournament at Lowndes.

Giddens, who wrestles at 285, and Register, at 220, will be favorites to win region championships.

And both won all of their matches at Cairo, helping the Packers to finish fourth in the 10-team tournament.

Register remains unbeaten this season after pinning two opponents from Tift County and one from Crisp County on Saturday.

He is now 24-0 with 18 pins this season. Just a junior, he raised his career record to 87-16 with 66 pins. Register has been the runner-up in the region tournament each of the last two years, finishing second at 189 as a freshman and at 215 last year.

Giddens won his first two matches by pins and then took a pair of 3-1 decisions at Cairo to raise his season’s record to 11-1 with eight pins. He is 85-18 with 64 pins in his career.

Giddens won the region championship as a sophomore and was the runner-up as a freshman and as a junior.

Freshman Garrett May finished second in Cairo at 145, pinning wrestlers from Tift County, Thomas County Central and Cairo before losing a 4-3 decision to Tift County in the finals.

He will take a 29-11 record with team-leading 23 pins into the region tournament.

Hart Sumner and Anderson Glenn took third-place finishes at Cairo.

Sumner, wrestling at 126, was pinned by Tift County in his first match, but responded by getting pins in his next three matches over wrestlers from Crisp County, Bainbridge and Thomas County Central. He is now 21-11 with 16 pins.

Glenn, at 138, won his first match over Cook, then dropped a 2-0 decision to Tift County. He finished with a pin and a 2-1 decision. A junior, Glenn is 25-5 with 12 pins and will chase his 100th career victory in the region tournament. His career record is 97-37 with 43 pins.

Javier Martinez, wrestling a 170, was fourth at 170 pounds, winning by a pin over Thomas County Central, losing an 11-7 decision to Tift County, winning by a pin over Bainbridge and Cairo and falling 9-4 to a Thomas County Central wrestler in his final match.

Martinez, a sophomore, is tied for the team lead in victories with Hudson May with 31.

Hudson May went 2-2 in the Syrupmaker Invitational, getting pins in his first two matches, before dropping 8-6 and 11-3 decisions. He is 31-8 with 20 pins.

Also at Cairo on Saturday, Stephen Bullard went 1-2 at 120 pounds; Walker Willis went 1-2 at 152 pounds; Jazavier Jackson was 1-2 at 170 pounds; and Quintin Hampton was 2-2 at 195 pounds.

     Trailing 4-0 when weather stopped its game against M&M Diesel on Tuesday and down 5-0 after three innings on Thursday, Harrell Auto Electric rallied to score nine runs in the final three innings to win 9-6 and claim the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department’s Mite League girls softball championship.
