MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County girls basketball team’s three-game winning streak came to an end in Douglas on Friday when the Lady Packers fell to Coffee 50-41 in a Region 1-AAAAAA contest.
The three straight victories, all over region opponents, got the Lady Packers to .500 in the league standings at 5-5.
But the loss to the Lady Trojans, whom they had defeated 53-46 in Moultrie three weeks ago, drops Colquitt to 13-7 overall and 5-6 in the region.
The win was just the third in the region for Coffee’s girls, now 3-5.
“We just didn’t come out ready to play,” Lady Packers coach Rondesha Williams said.
Colquitt’s girls got another strong effort from junior Makeba Ponder, who scored 24 of her team’s 41 points.
Abbi Beth Paulk had nine; Dexshalyn Polite has five; Natalie Griffin had two; and Ja’nice Sailor added a free throw.
The Lady Packers have just one more region game before the region tournament, which will begin Feb. 12 at Valdosta High.
That game will be at Tift County against a Lady Devils team that took an 8-0 region record into its game at Lowndes on Friday.
The result of the Colquitt County-Coffee boys game was not available at press time.
Colquitt County will return to the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Memorial Gymnasium to meet Albany High in a pair of non-region contests tonight.
The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m.
The Lady Packers and Packers also will be at home on Tuesday when they play host to Turner County.
The senior members of the boys and girls teams will be honored between games.

All the teams in the tournament were 10U teams except the Legends, who were the only 9U team. And now there are none. Region 1 had three representatives in the Class AAAAAA baseball semifinals, but none reached the Final Four.

Dairy Queen wins Junior girls championships
Dairy Queen clinched the Junior girls softball championship on Tuesday, defeating Pretty Poison II 6-1.

Quality Employment wins Midget League title
Quality Employment needed a win or a tie in its game against Southwest Georgia Insurance on Tuesday to claim the Midget League championship.
Quality won the title when the game ended in a 5-5 tie.

Goodman eighth at World Championship Trials
Florida State rising senior Kelsey Goodman placed eighth in the finals of the women’s 1-meter springboard with a total of 476.00 after 10 dives at the USA Diving World Championship Trials at the Morcom Aquatics Center.

Tournament champions
The Colquitt County Crossfire won the first tournament they played in this season when they took first place last weekend in Douglas. Crossfire opened with a 4-2 win ove the Middle Georgia Hurricanes in the play-in game. They then won 9-8 over the Diamond Girls; 14-2 over the Hurricanes again; and then 13-3 in the championship game over the Hurricanes. The team includes Amber Brown, Madison Plymel, batgirl Libby Wetherington, Jacey Wetherington; Emily Allegood, KaLise Richardson, Katlynn Powers, Julia Duncan, Ava Dickens, Gracie Paulk, Elle Perryman, Allie Boatwright and coaches Heath Wetherington, Craig Perryman and Jeremy Dickens.

Propst: Offensive line a work in progress
One of Colquitt County’s goals for spring practice was start rebuilding the offensive line.
That task is coming along slowly, Packers coach Rush Prospt said on Wednesday. -
Recreation baseball tournaments to open Monday
The Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department will hold its postseason Midget League and Farm League tournaments next week at the Magnolia Sports Complex.
