First-year shooter leads rifle team to victory

MOULTRIE —  First-year shooter Katelyn Wilcott shot a match-high 284 to lead the Colquitt County rifle team to a 1,115-1,102 victory over Tift County on Tuesday in Tifton.

Wilcott’s score was her highest of the season, beating her previous high score by 10 points.

And her Tuesday score included a 95 in the difficult standing position, the team’s highest score in that position this season.

Shehad a 94 in the prone position and a 95 in the kneeling position.

Also turning a promising performance on Tuesday was Elyssa Hullett, another rookie.

Hullett had a 275, also her highest score this season. She had a 93 in the prone, a 91 in the standing and 91 in the kneeling position.

“I’m real proud of both of them,” said Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, the team’s coach. “They’re consistent and they are gaining. And they are learning.”

The Packers also counted a 280 shot by Kiarron Hendry that included a team-high 96 in the prone position, an 88 in the standing and match high-tying 96 in the kneeling position.

Kellen Kern had the Packers other counting score, a 276 that included a 95 in the prone,  an 87 in the standing and a 94 in the kneeling.

The 276 was his highest score of the season as well.

The Packers are now 3-0, but in their last two matches have not reached their season-opening score of 1,120.

“And we are giving away too many points in the prone position,” Bryant said. “We are going to work on that.”

Colquitt will be off until Thursday, Feb. 7, when they travel to meet Turner County.
