Two girls tournaments set for Saturday at the Magnolia Complex
The Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department will hold a pair of girls softball tournaments on Saturday at the Magnolia Sports Complex.
Summer baseball is about assessment
The scoreboard often is not in operation during a Colquitt County baseball team’s summer game, but that is fine with Packers coach Tony Kirkland.
Colquitt County’s Dustin McAlpin, who plays baseball at Tiftarea Academy, was named to the GISA All-State team and to the All-Region 3-AAA first team. He also received Tiftarea Academy’s Christian Character Award, which was voted on by the players. He has signed to play his college baseball at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla. He is the son of Dwayne and Leanne McAlpin. Tiftarea went 28-5 in 2013, setting a school record for victories. Also honored at the team’s baseball banquet were Coach Brad Porter, named the Region 3-AAA Coach of the Year, and Eric Lee, the Region 3-AAA Player of the Year. Also earning All-Region honors were Mason Bryant, Rob Flick, Greer Howard, Eric Lee, Cade Marlowe and Thomas Spurlin. All-Region honorable mention included Jake Ball, Taylor Boothe and Bo Vickers. Lee also made the All-State team with Howard receiving honorable mention. Tiftarea Academy presented Marlowe with the Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes the player with the highest GPA. Porter also presented three other awards voted on by the players: Christian Kozma received the Teammate Award; Marlowe received the Ironman Award; and Lee received the Leadership Award.
