Rifle team wins to run its record to 7-0

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High rifle team topped the 1,140 mark for the fourth time this season and ran its record to 7-0 with a 1,146-8-4 victory over Dooly County on Tuesday at the high school.

The Packers were able to turn in their third-highest score of the season despite being without Jeff Peacock, one their top shooters, who was sick.

Richard Boyd made up for Peacock’s absence with a season-high 288.

First-year shooter Nakea Jordan also turned in her best score of the season, a 284.

Erica Soto led the team with a 289 and Caitlin Davis had a 285.

The team shot a season-high 391 in the kneeling position, besting its previous high of 384 by seven points.

Soto missed hitting the 290 mark for the third time this season by just one point. Her 289 raised her scoring average to 288.1 for the season.

She had a 98 in the prone position, a 94 in the standing and a 97 in the kneeling position.

Boyd had not broken 284 since turning in that score in that score in the first match of the season, but he was clearly on target on Tuesday.

He had a 98 in the prone position, a 91 in the standing position and a season-high 99 in the kneeling position.

Davis had a 97 in the prone postion, a 90 in the standing and a 98 in the kneeling position.

After not shooting higher than 279 in her first four matches, Jordan has shot 281 and 284 in her last two.

On Tuesday, she scored a 95 in the prone position, a 92 in the standing and a 97 in the kneeling position.

The Packers also had some fine non-counting scores, including a 283 by first-year shooter Kaitlin Turner; a 281 by Ivett Soto; and 276 by Todd Lamb, a 273 by Daniel Bastos; and a 254 from Adam Crosby.

Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant, the team’s coach, said his team is working on not rushing its shots and improving its body position.

“We’re trying to work on the little things that will keep us in the running,” Bryant said. “We’re shooting as much as possible.”
