MOULTRIE —
When Colquitt County High’s Heath Lamb signed in 2010 to run cross country at Darton College, he said that one of his goals was to be able to run faster.
Lamb accomplished that and more in his two years with the Cavaliers.
And his performances with Darton have not gone unnoticed.
Lamb signed this week with Columbus State University.
Lamb has had an outstanding two years at Darton, where he broke the school record in an 8-kilometer race as a freshman and finished second in the Region XVII cross country meet last October.
The runner-up finish in the meet, run in a time of 27:04, helped the Cavaliers win their third straight region title and enabled Lamb to become a first-team All-Region runner.
“I wish I had 10 Heaths,” said Darton cross country head coach Bruce Skiles, who son Brandon Skiles transfered to Coumbus State from Darton last fall.
Brandon Skiles and Lamb were teammates at Darton.
Lamb was recruited for Darton by current Sports Information Director David Mann, who coached the cross country team from 2007-2010.
Mann remembers first watching Lamb run as a Colquitt County Packer at meet at Robert Cross Middle School in Albany.
“I found Heath at a local high school race and approached his coach, who told me what kind of an athlete Heath was and what he believed Heath could be,” Mann said. “Recruiting him was a no-brainer from there. Heath immediately had an impact as a freshman and was one of my most reliable athletes. I always knew he would have a good race. He’s a very head-strong individual, yet very coachable as well.
“And when he trains, watch out, he goes at it with intensity.”
Colquitt County cross country coach Mell Wier said he was pleased to hear that his former runner will get a chance to compete again the next two years.
“He shows what hard work will do,” Wier said. “He has done everything he has needed to do.”
During his senior season at Colquitt County, he won three races, finished 99th in the state meet and was named to the South of the Border team, which featured the top runners south of Macon.
