MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County tennis teams were victimized by the draw in the opening round of Chick-fil-A Invitational at the Abraham Baldwin College courts on Friday
Both the Lady Packers and Packers dropped 0-5 decisions to Starr’s Mill High of Fayetteville.
Starr’s Mill has outstanding boys and girls tennis programs.
Both reached the state semifinals last year when the Panthers posted a 21-4 record and the Lady Panters went 22-3.
The Colquitt County boys won just seven games in the debut of Chris Naquin as head coach.
David Forehand, playing his first match at No. 1 singles after two outstanding seasons at No. 3, lost 1-6, 1-6.
Freshman Lance Shealy fell 0-6, 2-6 at No. 2 singles.
And Cody Jenkins fell 0-6, 1-6 at No. 3 singles.
The Packers No. 1 doubles team of Nick Nichols and Nick Mobley lost 0-6, 1-6.
Colquitt fell at No. 2 doubles as well, where Drew Davis and Jeremy Johnson fell 0-6, 1-6.
“They were very, very, very good,” Naquin said of the Panthers. “But the scores don’t indicate how tight the match was.”
Girls coach Holly Lewis had to shuffle her lineup against a strong Starr’s Mill team.
Conley Ward played No. 1 singles nad fell to Emily Shull, 0-6, 0-6.
Anna Barber played No. 2 singles and lost to Rachel Williams 0-6, 0-6. Rachel Bostick played No. 3 singles and lost to Erin Egoroff 0-6, 0-6.
At No. 1 doubles, Hannah Radney and Haley Trebony lost to Kaley Inhulsen and Shannon McKillit 4-6, 3-6.
And Ansley Moore and Haley Cash lost to Sam Curtis and Cassidy Sparkman 4-6, 2-6 at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Packers played without three girls who normally would have been in the top 11, but who were in the school musical.
Lewis said she was pleased with how her team battled a strong Atlanta-area team.
The Lady Packers will play at 11 a.m. this morning.
