MOULTRIE —
The Colquitt County girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 32-23 victory over Camden County on Friday in Kingsland.
After having dropped five of their last six games, the Lady Packers needed a win and the Lady Wildcats were just the team they needed to play.
The Camden girls are now 1-5 in the Region 1-AAAAAA standings, with their only win coming over Valdosta on Tuesday.
Colquitt raised its overall record to 11-6 and its region record to 3-5.
The Lady Packers opened region play back on Jan. 4 with a 51-47 overtime victory over the Lady Wildcats on the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Memorial Gymnasium.
“We needed that,” Lady Packers coach Rondesha Williams said. “It was a confidence booster. “We’ve been through a very rough time.
“But I told the girls we had to go through some things like that to get where we need to be.”
The key to Friday’s victory after a long bus ride was tough defense and Dezaray Fowler, starting in place of the injured Ashley Henry, provided it.
“She gave us some great defense,” Williams said. “And we are going to need it when we face Brunswick (tonight at home). They’ve got some quick guards.”
Natalie Griffin also was strong defensively and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Makeba Ponder led the Lady Packers with 10 points.
Dexshalyn Polite added eight; Shakhila Harry and Abbi Beth Paulk each had four; and Griffin, Fowler and Ja’nice Sailor each had two.
Ponder also had 10 points in the Lady Packers frustrating 44-41 loss at Valdosta on Tuesday.
She is now averaging 20.8 points overall and 21.4 in the eight region games.
Brunswick played at home on Friday against Tift County and took a 4-2 record into that game. The Lady Pirates defeated the Colquitt County girls 62-49 on their home court on Jan. 5.
The Brunswick girls took a three-game winning streak into its game against Tift on Friday.
The Lady Devils went into the game sitting atop the region girls standings with a 6-0 record.
Valdosta, which was off Friday and will be at Lowndes today, is in second with a 6-2 record.
Lowndes, which was at Coffee on Friday, was 2-4 and Coffee was 1-4.
The Colquitt County boys could not complete the sweep and fell to Wildcats 56-49.
The Packers fall to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the region.
“We played three freshmen tonight,” coach Levon Grant said. “We’ve got some guys I think we’ll want to keep around.”
The Packers only region victory has been over the Wildcats back on Jan. 4 by a 71-68 score.
The Camden County boys are now 1-6 in the region.
Xavier Terry led the Packers with 18 points and Kamoris Woods added 15.
Freshman Jaquan Blakely also was in double-figures with a season-high 10 points.
Javonta Woods added three, Jay Tolbert had two and freshman Kiel Pollard had a free throw.
Aikaari Ryce was another freshman who got playing time for the Packers.
“These young guys are getting some playing time and are getting some experience for us,” Grant said.
The Valdosta boys, who were off on Friday will take an 8-0 region record into their game at Lowndes tonight.
The Vikings took a 2-4 record into their Friday night game at Coffee.
