MOULTRIE —
Hayes Sumner and Hayden Suggs won championships to lead the Colquitt County middle school wrestling team to a second place finish in the Turner County Middle School Invitational held Saturday.
Javarius Madison, Joshua Young, Coy Kirkland and Tyler Robinson had runner-up finishes.
“They are all very deserving of their accomplishments,” coach Kevin Sumner said. “There were a lot of great wrestlers at this tournament and to make it to the finals is tough.
“We can’t say enough about these kids. Most are first-and second-year wrestlers and are still trying to put it all together.”
Taking bronze medals were Savonte Wilson, John Lewis, Victor Castenon, Jayden Merritt and Alex Everett.
Fourth-place finishers were John Cone, Blake Tillery, Hunter Yarbrough, Cameron Vereen, Gage Kent and Jamie Morgan. Jay Ward, Ethan Dean, Ahmari Lewis and Alejandro Sanchez finished fifth.
“We took 24 kids and 21 of them placed in the top five,” Sumner said. “That’s a huge deal for such a young team. We are very proud of these kids and the hard work and effort they have given us this year.”
The Colquitt middle school wrestlers are undefeated in dual matches and face two tough teams today when Fitzgerald and Cairo visit the Pineland gymnasium for a 4:30 p.m. match.
Fitzgerald won the Turner County tournament.
“We wrestled a lot of their kids,” Sumner said. “This will be a great head-to-head match.”
Colquitt defeated Cairo earlier this season, “but they always come ready to wrestle,” Sumner said, adding that both Fitzgerald and Cairo are well-coached and have tough wrestlers.
“This is just what we need before heading to Adel on Saturday for the SGAC conference tournament,” he said.
