MOULTRIE — Colquitt County boys basketball Kirven Davis knows that it will take more than one player to make up for the points and rebounds the Packers received from senior Nate Hill last season.
And during this summer’s work, Davis has targeted several players who, together, might be able fill the gap.
The Packers went to camps at Florida State, Albany Tech, Albany State and Middle Georgia this summer and Davis was pleased with the effort as the team tries to put last year’s 8-19 record behind it and build for the 2010-2011 season.
“We have a fun group,” Davis said. “They worked real hard.
“We are counting on Quan Daniels and D’Amonte Ridley for a lot of leadership for us next season. They’ll be the key.”
Daniels and Ridley are part of large group of players who also are members of the Packers football team. That group also includes Tommy Hudson, Stacey Blackwell, Tre Scott, Octavius Little and Octavius Jackson.
And while those players will have to work their way into the lineup next season, several players who are not with the football team are taking advantage of the opportunity to work on their games.
Davis was impressed with the improvement of Trey White over the summer.
“He really had a good showing at Florida State,” Davis said of the rising senior. “He really raised some eyebrows. He had a couple of 30-point games.”
Rising junior Dillon Presley also shot the ball well during the summer.
“He made some good strides this summer,” Davis said.
Those two are in the group that must step up and help replace Hill.
Rising freshman Kenji Thompson could see some varsity time early in the season at point guard and fellow freshman Jaymius Pittman also could play early.
“The summer was like cramming for a test,” Davis said.
“Now it’s all about how we retain the things we learned this summer.”
