MOULTRIE —
MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County softball team tuned up for today’s Region 1-AAAAA opener by rallying past Crisp County 5-3 on Monday in Cordele.
The Lady Packers will take a 5-1 record and a four-game winning streak into today’s meeting with Lowndes, one of the region’s — and state’s — top programs.
Lowndes was 24-12 last season and 30-8-1 the year before and has averaged 24 wins a year since 2005.
This season, the Vikettes are 4-4 with one of those wins coming by a 16-4 margin over Coffee in their region-opener on Aug. 24.
“There will no room for error against Lowndes,” Lady Packers coach Carman Phillips said. “They are very disciplined at the plate, they work the count and they are very aggressive on the bases. “We just can’t give them the little things.”
But if the Lady Packers can hit against Lowndes as they did on Monday in Cordele, they will have chance to get the region part of their schedule off to a good start.
Down 3-2, the Lady Packers scored two runs in the fifth to take the lead than added an insurance run in the seventh.
“After not having played for over a week, we came out a little sluggish,” Phillips said.
The Lady Packers banged out 12 hits, including a pair of doubles by freshman Ainsley Davis. Meagan May, Taylor Owens and Hannah Hancock also had two hits each.
Jordan Taylor and Anna Laura Beason had the others.
Crisp County took a 6-1 record into the game and had won four in a row. In their three previous games, Crisp had outscored Calvary Day, Wilcox County and Westside-Macon by a combined 35-4.
“They are a pretty good ball team,” Phillips said of Crisp County.
But Hancock and Davis cooled off the Lady Cougars.
Hancock was the starting pitcher and she went the first three innings, striking out four.
Davis pitched the final four innings, striking out two Lady Cougars.
The Colquitt County Gray team (3-4) will play Lowndes at 4 p.m. today. The varsity game will follow at 5:45 p.m.
Also in the region today, Valdosta will travel to Coffee. Both are 0-1 in the region. Colquitt will travel to play Tift County, 1-0 in the region, on Thursday.
