Valdosta came to Ike Aultman Field on Friday having scored 42 runs in it previous three games, but apparently had not run into a Packer-like pitching.

Aubrey McCarty went the distance in the first game giving up just five hits and one unearned seventh-inning run as Colquitt County won the first game of Friday’s Region 1-AAAAAA doubleheader at Ike Aultman Field, 6-1.

The Wildcats managed five runs in the second game — all in one inning —  but had no answer for Ross Goforth, who hit three home runs and drove in five runs in the Packers 15-5 victory.

It is believed that Jim Turner is the last Packer to hit three homers in a game. He accomplished the feat in 1984. It also came against Valdosta.

The victories raise the Packers region record to 4-0. They are are 5-3 overall.

Valdosta falls to 0-2 in the region and 3-6 overall.

In the opener, three of the five Valdosta hits never left in the infield.

McCarty walked only two — both in the seventh inning — and lowered his early-season 7.00 ERA significantly.

He struck out four and left the Wildcats unable to mount a threat until the seventh when a two-out throwing error scored the Wildcats only run.

The Packers got all the runs they would need in the third inning off Valdosta starter Zach Newham, turning  two walks, two hit batsmen and a bunt single by Mack Hathcock into a 2-0 lead.

A two-out single by Blake Bennett drove in Jared May to extend the Packers lead to 3-0 in the ourth. Colquitt scored three more times in the fifth.

Hathcock walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-0 and Bennett followed with a two-out, two-strike single to drive in two more runs and chase Newham.

That was plenty enough for McCarty.

The Packers had six hits, including two each by Hathcock and Bennett. May and Jonah Bozeman had the others.

Bennett drove in three runs. Hathcock, McCarty and Colin Kirkland had the others.

Newham went 4 2/3 innings and gave up six runs, all earned, and six hits and six walks. He hit four batters.

Jacob Davis retired four of the five batters he faced, but the damage was done.

The Packers were within a strike of ending the second game in five innings.

Leading 14-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Packers only had to hold Valdosta to four runs or fewer to win on the mercy rule.

But a two-out, two-strike double by Craig Berry drove in three runs to cut the Packers lead to 14-5 and the game lasted two more innings.

The final Packer run came on Goforth’s last home run, a solo shot to lead off the top of the seventh.

Goforth’s first homer came with two aboard in the top of the first as the Packers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. His second came in the fourth inning and came one batter after McCarty laced a laser over the right field fence, giving the Packers back-to- back homers.

The Packers had 14 hits in the second game.

Cole Bryant got the win, pitching into the fifth, giving up three runs.

Also on Friday, Coffee swept a doubleheader from Brunswick, 11-6 and 11-5. Lowndes won the first game of it doubleheader with Tift 15-14.
