MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame will induct five new members at its annual banquet this year and for the first time will honor an outstanding team.
The annual banquet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Colquitt County High School cafeteria. The inductees also will be honored before the start of the next night’s football game against Coffee High at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The banquet will be the 11th honoring the top players, coaches and other contributors to Colquitt County athletics.
This year’s class includes:
Kevin Blanton – Outstanding junior golfer and member of the Colquitt County High team 1989-1990.
Blanton went on to play golf for four seasons at Troy State, where he was a two-time All-American and team captain.
While at Troy, he was named All-Conference three times and won five collegiate tournaments.
As an amateur, he won the Atlanta Open in 1994 and as a professional, he was a four-time winner on the NGA-Hooters Tour.
Jud Campbell — One of the most outstanding divers produced by the Moss Farms program and was a National Champion in 2000. Diving at the University of Georgia, he was a two-time SEC champion and an SEC Diver of the Year and an All-American.
A graduate of the University of Georgia, he also graduated from law school at Pepperdine and currently lives in San Diego.
Darrell Funderburk — All-Region quarterback for Packers in 1984, when he helped lead the Packers to a 9-2-1 record in the second year of the Jim Hughes era.
Funderburk led Colquitt County in passing for three seasons and is ninth on the Packers all-time career passing yardage list.
After playing at Valdosta State, he returned to Colquitt County, where he became an assistant coach and offensive coordinator and helped develop Packer quarterbacks Parks Hughes, Jeremy Merritt, Cliff Henry, Matt Parker, Reggie Stancil and Terrence Jones. Now retired from coaching, he is an assistant principal at Colquitt County High.
Dextra Polite – All-state defensive back at Colquitt County and a key member of the outstanding defense that helped lead the 1994 to an undefeated season and the school’s only state championship.
Polite went on to play two seasons at Georgia Military College and two more at Clemson, where he was a second-team All-ACC selection at cornerback.
After graduating from Clemson, he has coached the defensive backs at Colquitt County, where he also has coached ninth-grade basketball and produced a Region 1-AAAAA varsity track championship team.
Willie Bell Robison – Participated in football, baseball, basketball and track at Moultrie High, graduating 1927.
Robison, the father of Hall of Famer Dennard Robinson, played football and baseball for three years at Oglethorpe, where he was the alternate captain of the Stormy Petrels baseball team and an outstanding tackle on football team.
The Hall of Fame also will begin honoring an outstanding team from the county each year, with the first being Colquitt County High’s 1994 state championship football team.
The Packers went 15-0 and won the school’s only state championship that year. The team finished ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA in Georgia and No. 3 in the nation.
Head coach Jim Hughes and quarterback Cliff Henry are already members of the Hall of Fame and cornerback Dextra Polite and assistant coach Darrell Funderburk will be inducted this year.

Level 3 gymnasts first, Level 4 team second in Thomasville

The Colquitt County girls basketball team held off a determined Tift County second-half rally on Saturday on the William Bryant Court at the Espy Gymnasium to get a 59-48 Region 1-AAAAA victory.

Seventh-grade girls win conference championship
The Colquitt County seventh-grade girls’ basketball team claimed the conference championship Saturday, upsetting previously undefeated Coffee, 20-19.

Lamb signs to run at Columbus State
When Colquitt County High’s Heath Lamb signed in 2010 to run cross country at Darton College, he said that one of his goals was to be able to run faster.
Lamb accomplished that and more in his two years with the Cavaliers.
And his performances with Darton have not gone unnoticed.
Lamb signed this week with Columbus State University. -
