Colquitt County High sophomore Makeba Ponder has been invited to attend the Maya Moore basketball camp next week.
“It’s a great honor for her, a sophomore, to be personally invited by Maya Moore,” Lady Packers coach Rondesha Williams said.
Moore, the former Collins Hill and University of Connecticut star, was the first pick in the WNBA draft, was the league’s Rookie of the Year and led the Minnesota Lynx to the league championship.
The camp will be held at the Suwanee Sports Academy and will begin on Monday.
Ponder is averaging 18.2 points for the 3-3 Lady Packers.
Of this and that:
• The Colquitt County girls, who have lost two in a row, will be back in action on Tuesday when they meet Leon High at 4 p.m. at Lawton Chiles High in Tallahassee in the Florida-Georgia Classic.
The Lady Packers also will play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Rickards High, also at Lawton Chiles.
The Colquitt County girls also will play in McDonald’s Invitational in Tifton on Dec. 27-29.
• The 0-4 Colquitt County boys will play in the Thomasville Holiday Hoopfest on Dec. 28-30. The Packers will open tournament play at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the Thomasville High gymnasium against Brunswick.
The Pirates will be a Region 1-6A opponent for the Packers beginning in 2012-2013.
The Packers also will play the next two days in the tournament.
• Madison County (Fla.) High’s undefeated run after a season-opening loss to Colquitt County came to an end on Saturday in the Class AAA state championship game.
The Cowboys were defeated 30-3 by American Heritage in the Citrus Bowl and finished 13-2.
• North Florida Christian won the Class 2A state title, defeating Admiral Farragut 69-0 in the championship game.
The undefeated Eagles are coached by former Colquitt County assistant Robert Craft.
• In the recent Georgia Fall Invitational, Auburn’s Anna Aguero finised second and Georgia Ann-Perry Blank was fourth on platform.
Blank also was third on 1-meter and eighth on 3-meter.
Aguero was second on 3-meter.
Georgia’s Owen Blank was second on 1-meter, third on 3-meter and 10th on platform.
• The Berry College men’s swimming team placed fifth in the Savannah College of Arts and Design Invitational on Dec. 3 in Savannah.
Moultrie’s Connor Walsh was on the relay team that earned the Vikings points.
Also on the team were Adam Jarrell, Andrew Beumer and Alan Campbell.

Paradise Pool and Patio completed an undefeated season by beating Southwest Georgia Bank 13-6 on Thursday to win the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department’s Farm League tournament championship.

Harrell Auto Electric rallies to claim Mite girls championship
Trailing 4-0 when weather stopped its game against M&M Diesel on Tuesday and down 5-0 after three innings on Thursday, Harrell Auto Electric rallied to score nine runs in the final three innings to win 9-6 and claim the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department’s Mite League girls softball championship.

Softball resumes
With longtime umpire James Stancil looking on, M&M Diesel first baseman Sarah Harrell awaits a throw in a recent game. M&M Diesel was leading Harrell Auto Elecric 4-0 in the third inning on Tuesday at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex when the game was suspended by a bad weather. The game will be completed today. If M&M Diesel defeats Harrell Auto Electric and also wins over Park Regency in a second game tonight, it will win the Mite League championship.

Four more members of the 2011 Colquitt County High football team have signed to continue their careers and number of the 2012 Packers are already receiving college offers.
