Soccer teams drop two at Houston County

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls soccer team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end in sudden death on Friday at Houston County.

The Lady Packers and Lady Bears played regulation and overtime and could not break a 2-2 tie.

After five penalty kicks, the teams were still even, but Houston got the win on a sudden death penalty kick.

The Colquitt County boys dropped the second match, falling 2-0 to the Bears.

The Lady Packers led 2-0 at the half, but were unable to hold the lead.

Suzi Hernandez gave the Lady Packers a 1-0 lead on a first-half free kick. A Lacey Webb goal put Colquitt up 2-0.

But Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis said his team was “slack” early in the second half and Houston County took advantage, scoring twice in a five-minute span to tie the match.

That’s where the game stood until sudden death.

“That’s a tough way to lose,” Jarvis said. “I hope that will make us stronger.

“We know we can play better. We didn’t play at all like we’ve been playing.”

The Lady Packers opened with a 10-0 victory at Coffee and followed it up with a satisfying 3-1 win over Thomas County Central.

“We played tough tonight,” Jarvis said. “We just got away from our game a little bit.

“We’ve just got to bounce back against Lowndes.”

Colquitt will travel to Lowndes on Tuesday.

The Vikettes are 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Region 1-AAAAA after defeating Tift County on penalty kicks on Friday.

The Colquitt County boys have yet to find the net after two games.

The Packers dropped their opener 1-0 to Coffee on Feb. 10 and could not get one past the Bears keeper on any of their four shots on goal on Friday.

“On our four shots, we only had one or two really good chances,” Packers coach Rob Craft said.

Houston scored a goal with six minutes left in the first half an added another halfway through the second half off a corner kick.

“Their first goal came after a miscommunication in the back,” Craft said. “And like good teams are supposed to do, they buried it.”

Craft is obviously concerned with the lack of offense.

“We go to Lowndes on Tuesday and we’ve got to find some goals,” Craft said. “We’ve got to be efficient with what we get.

“We need to take some shots and put them on frame. Maybe once we get one, they’ll start coming in a domino effect.”

After traveling to Lowndes on Tuesday, Colquitt County will go on the road again on Saturday, Feb. 28, to meet Warner Robins.
