MOULTRIE — One night after an ugly 21-point loss at home to Bainbridge, the Colquitt County girls basketball team got itself back together and defeated Houston County 39-29 on Saturday in Warner Robins.
“We played much better,” said Coach Rondesha Williams, who said her team “gave up” in the fourth quarter against the Lady Cats the night before.
“We needed that. We played like a team, like we did early in the season. We have just got to come out ready to play.”
The victory got the Lady Packers back to .500 at 7-7 overall. They are now 2-1 in the region.
Houston County’s girls have struggled all season to score points. They also had floundered on Friday, falling to Lowndes 46-28.
The Lady Packers took advantage and got a big night offensively from Umeika Henry, who scored 14 points.
Nicolle Thomas added eight, Bria Wallace had seven, Ashley Patillo scored six and Shay Lovett and Tiffany McBride each had two.
Williams was especially pleased with McBride’s play.
“She really stepped it up on defense,” Williams said.
Williams was frustrated that her team still missed several easy baskets, but the Lady Packers improved on the free throw line, where they hit 10-of-15.
Houston County drops to 4-10 overall and 0-4 in the region.
The Lady Packers will face region-leading Lowndes on the road on Tuesday.
The Lowndes girls remain unbeaten in the region after their victory over the Lady Bears on Friday.
The Vikettes, 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the region, got 10 points each from Kendra Thornton, Kiera Peak and D’arcy Williams.
On Friday, the Northside boys pulled what might be considered a Region 1-AAAAA upset when they defeated Coffee 80-73.
The loss was just the second for the Trojans, dropping them to 14-2 overall and 3-2 in region play.
Northside had opened the region portion of its schedule with a 66-28 loss to Tift County on Tuesday, but were able to overcome a 29-point effort by the Trojans’ Trevis Simpson to get the victory.
Michael Faulk also had a big night in a losing effort for the Trojans, scoring 20.
Greg Fields led the Eagles with 23 points, while Kenya Ward added 18.
The Northside boys played host to 14-0 Valdosta on Saturday.
The Wildcats remained unbeaten on Friday with an 85-65 victory over Warner Robins.
Jay Rome led Valdosta witg 23 points. Thoullit Hunter had 21 and Cameron Veunus had 15 for the Wildcats.
Kenny Fluellen had 20, Jared Fluellen had 15 and Trevlyne Williams had 13 for the Warner Robins boys, now 2-9 overall and 0-4 in the region.
The Valdosta boys will travel to Douglas for a rematch with Coffee on Tuesday.
Warner Robins will play host to Tift County on Tuesday. Tift will be playing just its second region date.
Houston County’s boys ran their overall record to 10-2 and went to 2-1 in the region with their 75-61 home victory over Lowndes on Friday.
The Bears turned the game around in the third quarter, scoring 22 points. Houston County senior Roger Stanton had a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter.
Buddy Bivins had 14 points and Brandon Davey added 11 for Houston County
The Coffee girls ran their region record to 3-2 Friday night when they outlasted Northside 57-54 in overtime.
Northside’s Tai Brown sent the game into the 4-minute extra period by hitting two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining.
But Coffee pulled away in the overtime.
Northside’s girls took an 0-2 record into their meeting with Valdosta on Saturday.
The Warner Robins girls ran their overall record to 10-3 and their Region 1-AAAAA record to 3-1 with their 65-58 victory over Valdosta on Friday at home.
The Demonettes were led by Danielle Gazaway, who scored 24 points, and by Courtney Johnson, who had 15.
The Valdosta girls, who were coming off a 40-39 victory over Colquitt County last Tuesday, fell to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the region.
The Lady Cats were led by Alisha Crawford, who had 23, including nine on three 3-pointers.
