Pack prepares for unbeaten Valdosta

MOULTRIE — The Region 1-AAAAA schedule was not exactly kind to the Colquitt County boys basketball team, forcing the Packers to play their first two games against what are expected to be the top two teams in the league.

The Packers, had their five-game winning streak snapped when they fell 66-45 to Coffee on Friday in Douglas.

The win over the Packers and Saturday’s 75-57 victory raised the Trojans overall record to 13-1 and their region record to 2-1.

That lone loss came at the hands of Valdosta, which will bring a 12-0 overall record and a 1-0 region mark to Moultrie tonight.

As impressive as the perfect record is the way the Wildcats, ranked No. 11 in Class AAAAA in the recent Georgia Sports Writers Association poll, are dismantling their opponents.

Coach Rufus McDuffie’s boys are averaging 86.8 points a game, have not scored fewer than 72 in a game, have scored 91 or more seven times and passed the century mark in a 102-63 victory over Hamilton County, Fla., on Dec. 22.

Doing much of the damage for the Wildcats has been 6-foot-5 sophomore Jay Rome.

In the Region 1-AAAAA-opening victory at Coffee, Rome scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Four days before, he had 30 points and 12 rebounds in a 91-59 win over Mitchell County.

In a non-region tournament game against Lowndes in November, Rome scored 28 points and had eight rebounds.

Rome had plenty of help in the region win over Coffee. Thoullit Hunter and Rontrel Frazier scored 11 points apiece.

Colquitt County’s boys, 5-6, will try to find a way to shut down Rome and the rest of the high scoring Wildcats and rediscover what enabled them to win five games in a row after opening the season with five straight losses.

The Packers got 18 points from Dominque Hadley in the loss to Coffee on Friday.

But the Packers also a need a return to form by leading scorer Nate Hill, who was averaging more than 19 points before being held to single-digits the last two games.

The Colquitt County girls can go to 2-0 in the region with a victory over the Lady Wildcats in today’s first game, which will begin at 6 p.m.

The Lady Packers have been streaky, winning four straight to open the season and losing three in a row in the Roundball Classic.

Colquitt’s girls won their region opener on Friday, defeating Coffee 53-52 on a late free throw by Umeika Henry.

The Lady Wildcats are 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the region after falling 48-37 to Coffee last Tuesday.

Also tonight in Region 1-AAAAA, Houston County will travel to Coffee and Northside will go to Tift County.

The Northside-Tift County matchup will mark the first region games of the season for those teams.
