Lady Packers win region opener

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys basketball team’s five-game winning streak came to a halt in Douglas on Friday, but the Lady Packers ended their three-game losing streak and opened Region 1-AAAAA play with a victory.

The Packers won their last two games in the U-Save-It Holiday Classic in Albany and swept all three of their games in the Colquitt County Roundball Classic at the Espy Gymnasium that concluded on Wednesday.

But Nate Hill, the team’s leading scorer, had three fouls in the first half and got his last two in the third quarter and was never a factor in the Packers 66-45 loss to Coffee.

Dominique Hadley picked up some of the slack, scoring 18 points. Brian Berl added eight and Luis Ballenilla had seven.

“We don’t want to get our heads down,” said Packers assistant Michael Hoffpauir. “We’ve got to get back to winning.

“We’ve got another tough game with Valdosta on Tuesday. If we don’t come out ready to play, it will be the same thing again.”

The Packers fall to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the region.

The Trojans, whose only loss this season came at the hands of unbeaten Valdosta on Tuesday, are 1-0 in the region and will be at home again tonight to meet Warner Robins.

Colquitt’s girls lost all three of their Roundball Classic games, but got a clutch late free throw from Umeika Henry to beat the Lady Trojans 53-52.

It was the second one-point victory of the season for the Lady Packers, who raised their record to 6-5.

Henry and Nicolle Thomas each had 16 points to lead the Lady Packers.

Ashley Patillo added eight, Bria Wallace had six, Shay Lovett had four and Sarah Strong had three.

“That’s what we’ve been working for,” Lady Packers coach Rondesha Williams said of opening the region with a victory.

The Lady Packers can make it two in a row when they meet Valdosta on Tuesday at the Espy Gymnasium. The Lady Wildcats, 5-5, dropped their region opener to Coffee by a 48-37 score.
