Eighth-grade split pair with Lowndes

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County eighth-grade girls basketball coach Palisa Harris hates to lose at home.

Her Lady Packers had already lost at the Willie J. Williams Middle School once this season and even with her team trailing Lowndes by two points at the half on Saturday, she was determined not to let another one get away.

The Lady Packers scored the first nine points of the third quarter and rolled on to a 36-19 victory.

The Colquitt County boys were within 64 seconds of completing a sweep, but the Vikings scored the final six points of the game to take a 40-35 victory.

The Colquitt County girls victory raises their record to 3-1, but a 17-point victory seemed unlikely when they went to half trailing 14-12.

“I just told them to go out and play defense,” Harris said when asked what she said to her team at the break.

The Lady Packers responded by holding the Vikettes to just five points in the final two quarters.

Colquitt’s girls took the lead for good when Shameka Reynolds hit a 3-pointer just 27 seconds into the third quarter.

The Lady Packers upped the lead to seven before Lowndes scored its only basket of the quarter and went on to lead by nine heading into the final six minutes.

Colquitt was led by center Cheyenne Reynolds, who scored 12 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. She had six of her points and six of her rebounds in the second half.

Reynolds is averaging 11.5 points a game and has scored 30 in Colquitt County two victories last week.

Shakhila Harry added eight on Saturday, Ja’Nice Sailor had seven, Shameka Raynolds had the 3-pointer and Aikerion Ryce, Natalie Griffin and Ashley Henry each had two.

Alex Foster led Lowndes with six points.

“We’ve got a lot to work on, but we’re improving,” Harris said.

The Colquitt County boys led the second game by 10 with 4:36 left in the game before Vikings mad e their comeback.

Lowndes scored just four points in the third quarter, but exploded for 19 in the fourth to drop the Packers to 2-2.

Colquitt scored 13 points in the third quarter, but just four in game’s final six minutes.

The Vikings took the lead at 37-35 on a 3-pointer by Justin Williams with 47 seconds remaining and added a free throw and a basket in the final 26 seconds.

Octavius Jackson led the Packers in scoring with eight points and in rebounding with 11.

Tymetrius Lowery and Nigel Spencer each had seven points, Deonte Johnson had five, John Peterson had four and Nate Madison and Carlos Johnson each scored a basket.

Williams led all scorers with 15 points.

The Colquitt County eighth-grade Packers will go out on the road for the first time this season on Monday when they travel to Tift County.
